How Trump’s Election Shook Obama: ‘What if We Were Wrong?’
MSN/NYTimes ^ | 5-30-2018 | Peter Baker

Riding in a motorcade in Lima, Peru, shortly after the 2016 election, President Barack Obama was struggling to understand Donald J. Trump’s victory.

“What if we were wrong?” he asked aides riding with him in the armored presidential limousine.

He had read a column asserting that liberals had forgotten how important identity was to people and had promoted an empty cosmopolitan globalism that made many feel left behind. “Maybe we pushed too far,” Mr. Obama said. “Maybe people just want to fall back into their tribe.”

SNIP---

Mr. Rhodes describes the reaction of foreign leaders. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan apologized for breaching protocol by meeting with Mr. Trump at Trump Tower in Manhattan after the election. Mr. Obama urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada to take on a more vocal role defending the values they shared.

Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany told Mr. Obama that she felt more obliged to run for another term because of Mr. Trump’s election to defend the liberal international order. When they parted for the final time, Ms. Merkel had a single tear in her eye. “She’s all alone,” Mr. Obama noted.

“Mr. Rhodes writes that neither he nor Mr. Obama knew at that time that there was an F.B.I. investigation into contacts between Mr. Trump’s campaign and Russia”

Page writes that she was preparing the talking points because “potus wants to know everything we’re doing.”

Obumbler is right about Merkel trying to defend the liberal order. Trump is destroying the WWII world order. The 4th turning is underway.

Obama doesn’t think like that.

He is, first and foremost, a communist that rode his skin color into the White House and was re-elected despite a dismal economic record during his first term. (Didn’t help that the Repubs. nominated a creepy guy like Romney.)

Obama’s follow-up 3rd (and 4th) term was to be the unelectable Hillary Clintoon. Like that is ever gonna happen.

Obama’s belief that communism is a good political system is as valid as his belief in Hillary Clinton being a 1st World Leader.

I contend that the left’s hatred of Trump has roots in their realization that their dream of a communist USA isn’t gonna happen. (Don’t forget that the 2 main Democrat candidates were BOTH communists....Hillary AND Bernie!

I don’t believe that they didn’t think Trump had a chance of winning.

I love the part about how Obama just had no idea that the FBI had placed multiple spies in the Trump campaign. and we can believe him too. After all, he never misused government agencies to target his political opponents. I mean, its not like his administration had an enemies list they sent the IRS after or anything......

Was the little Nazi propagandist Peter Baker hiding in the luggage and recording the conversation?

Desperate fake news.

“I’ve got the economy set up well for him.” — Obama

If anyone believes Obama said that, I could sell him the Golden Gate bridge. Edited in for election year spin.

Merkel graduated from Karl Marx University.

I don’t mean metaphorically. That was the actual name of the university when she graduated. It has since been changed to the University of Leipzig.

This is preaching to the choir, but ...

This is more than just a book plug. It is an attempt to re-write history around what Obama knew about the Russian meddling claim and to construct a safety moat against the charge that HE was the source of both the false claim of Russian meddling and at least OK’d if not ordered the FBI spying on the Trump campaign. It shows me they are very, very worried.

The NYT is counting on most people not remembering that when the false claim first came up Obama claimed to have told Putin “cut it out” while at the same time saying to the public that there simply is no way the Russians or anyone else can actually tap into the voting machines and diddle the tallies. This article now claims they were so worried about just such hacking that it guided their actions.

Its also an attempt to placate a public that clearly did believe Obama had done many awful things (not, as speculated in the article, that “people just want to get comfortable back in their tribes”). This will work with the left, but the public at large will hear this (as I do) as simply a smoother way of attacking “their guns and their bibles”.

I can’t imagine the book is anything other than propaganda dressed up a a memoir.

Obama’s legacy has been erased.

They’re still shaken by the November 8, 2016 outcome.

Good.

It's like losing 8 years of your life. I do mean the life of not only the U.S., but the entire civilized world.

He had read a column asserting that liberals had forgotten how important identity was to people and had promoted an empty cosmopolitan globalism that made many feel left behind. “Maybe we pushed too far,” Mr. Obama said. “Maybe people just want to fall back into their tribe.”

Obama's surprise and outrage at this is transparently feigned. His ideological position, and that of other liberals has been to force "empty cosmopolitan globalism" down the throats of white Americans while encouraging the most extreme ethnocentrism and tribalism among non-whites. As I recall, Jeremiah Wright's sermons and BlackLivesMatter hooliganism weren't exactly the stuff of "cosmopolitan globalism." The backlash that Obama whines about is a reaction to this kind of hypocrisy.

“Maybe we pushed too far,” Mr. Obama said. “Maybe people just want to fall back into their tribe.”

The mindset of a liberal. Total projection. They are the ones balkanizing the country.

It couldn’t be any of their insane policies.

The left threw the working class completely overboard and decided to cater to fringe lunatics, identity politics and constituencies dependent on government.

Yeah, we’re all just a bunch of white racists. Is that the tribe you mention, Barry?

Your soul-crushing globalism had nothing to do with it?

Obama's "bitter clingers" and Hillary's "deplorables" are the white middle and working classes. Sometime over the last 20-30 years, Democrats decided that they didn't want or need the support of the white working or middle class to win elections, banking instead on the votes and support of non-whites with chips on their shoulders against whitey/gringo, college campus radicals, homosexuals, and feminists were enough to win elections.

When this gallery of circus freaks doesn't quite give enough votes to put them over the top, the Democrats adopt a strategy of "we despise you, but we still need your vote" towards their former constituency. Then they're shocked, outraged, and incredulous that the people they've been spitting on decide to vote Republican, or not to vote at all.
