My first wife was a GIA certified jeweler and diamond buyer. I gave her a synthetic diamond engagement ring because we especially knew about the ridiculous mark-up.
I’ve thought about some great stuff you could do with synthetic diamonds. By carefull application of different colors and then carving with lasers you could create diomond based art. Imagine a wedding ring with an image embedded in it.
South Africa stars confiscating property from white folk and a couple of months later DeBeers declares they are shifting to synthesizing diamonds somewhere outside South Africa? Coincidence? Perhaps. But either way it sounds like South Africa is going to have a useless industry on its hands.
My gut feeling is that its about 1000% (10X) of the cost.
So much for all the stories I’ve read of them warehousing butt loads of diamonds to manipulate prices.

I believe diamonds are a semi precious stone. The De Beers have been manipulating the market all that time. But now, ALL the stones can be made commercially. Heck in ten years you may be able to print them...LOL

I worked a contract with a certain “friend in the diamond business” here in Colorado. I saw the markups and they were stunning. Wholesale was pennies on the retail dollar.
It’s hard to acknowledge, but it seems like diamonds and ED fund 90% of radio stations these days.
Thats why i asked my husband for one. The vacation we used the money for meant a lifetime of great memories. He did buy a pair of diamond earrings for me and i fussed and never wore them. Would have liked another vacation instead.

Actually it was always better than natural diamonds
you know how they used to detect/differentiate between natural and lab-made diamonds? Natural diamonds all have a flaw, small or large; while lab-made diamonds are flawless.
DeBeers charges huge amounts by cutting off the supply so raising prices for diamonds.
Lab made diamonds are flawless compared to natural diamonds.
South Africa isn't in the top 5.
