The Arizona may cease to exist as a physical artifact, but she will live in our hearts forever.
Build a new one. I’ve been there several times. It reminds me of the Civil War cemeteries and battlefields that I’ve also visited. Quiet and reverent. I took my Grand Parents and two of their friends there in 1979. Grandparents were respectful and their friends were loud and obnoxious. Grandparents and I talked about this and I never saw their friends again.
When I was in the Air Force in 2013 we visited Pearl Harbor. I love History and Pearl Harbor ranks at the very top. It was always my dream to visit and I never thought I would ever get the chance.
During my visit we visited the U.S.S. Missouri, as I was getting ready to board the boat to visit the Arizona memorial we got word the harbor master had closed tours due to "rough seas".
We left the next day. I was fine with never visited Pearl Harbor but I since I did manage to make it a reality I have go to back. I couldn't visit The Missouri and not go see the Arizona.
Now this news, I can't express how crestfallen I am.
The memorial is completely seperate from the USS Arizona. It does not touch the sunken vessel.
USS Arizona Memorial reopened after crews determine dock is safe
Periodically due natural wear, and deterioration by the elements structures, piers, etc. have to be completely replaced. It may be time conditions warrant a reconstruction project. It’s worth it.
I was there in 1969. Also saw “Japanese” dive bombers overhead as they were also filming TORA TORA TORA at that time.
Looks to me like the politics on Oahu are more concerned about the HART than the memorial.
If its really that bad then get a barge, anchor it well, put up a sturdy canopy or just some modified connex containers if they really must save money, move the memorial over to the barge until the repairs are made.
But i doubt they will consider that at al, they could just set it up on the deck of the Missouri, but again they are whining about lost tourism from the eruptions on the Big Island.
Does the memorial itself float free or is it on pylons of some sort?
Is it possible that a quake from Kilauea (yes, I know, different island) caused this problem?
I’ve had several very different experiences there. First couple of times everyone was very quiet and respectful of this sacred place. Then disembarked with a boat load of Japanese youth. They couldn’t shut up. Terrible experience. Last time a USMC retired was a docent and demanded respect. He looked like he just had spent the morning as a drill instructor to some boots. Everything about him was perfect.
Trump... “We’re going to repair the Arizona and Japan is going to pay for it!” (Humor intended)
Neglect from 28 years of stupid CoC’s and their minions. I expect Trump as CoC to change this neglect, and hire diligent, American-loving subordinates who will care for America’s and her relics.
Isn’t there another battleship sunk near the Arizona?
I suspect that incident qa while back where the prop wash from some ship maneuvering nearby caused much upheaval of the docking structure. It was closed for a while then.
As the steel corrodes away and the ship deforms/slumps under its own weight the steel is hardened due to long term fatigue. Hardened steel is getting more brittle while the ship wants to deform ever more. The same phenomia happens to really old steel bridges (40 years plus). When you weld a crack in brittle steel, the weld is much stronger then the base material, an adjacent crack propagates.
It lasted the lifetime of most all of the WWII veterans which is something to appreciate.
I would wonder if the closing is actually due to the threat posed by the ships weight collapsing against the colomns supporting the walkway above the ship? Thats the only reason I can think of for such a closure, risk to life. If thats the case, its just an engineering problem to solve. Removing the existing walkway and replacing it with something supported differently. One-two years in design and construction.
She has been down there a long time now. The ocean’s salt water, etc. have taken their toll on her, plus the damages from the attack. I figured one day she would probably collapse.
The docking area doesn’t look all that sturdy.
It might be designed to break away if a boat hits it too hard or from a strong storm.

Wonder if the Volcano is affecting it since its in the same chain of islands maybe the earthquakes ? just a thought
