You aren’t being remembered unless you are dead.

Yep, I’ve heard “have a great weekend “ several times the last 2 days...I think it’s just habit of some who don’t think too deep. NY paper is full of Memorial Day sales, etc ..again the multitude of different cultures are clueless in the history of what this sacred day stands for.....

“Yeah until I was told to never wish someone a happy memorial day I never heard of it either. Odd.”

I’ve heard people say it. In fact, lots of folks think the purpose of Memorial Day is to honor all veterans when actually it’s to honor and revere those who have made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. Btw, lots of folks don’t know the reason why we celebrate the 4th of July. They just know it’s a day off and a good day to grill and drink beer.....

OK OK, you guys win. People say it... But why?

Umm, that's the point of this piece... So few people now have close friends and family serving in the military that it's foreign to them. I hear it every year, and have this year also, along with "thanks for your service". I tell them I have a day; Veterans Day, and active duty have Armed Forces Day. Today is not about those who serve, but those who made the ultimate sacrifice. They usually look at me like I'm being rude for correcting them. Pieces like this one, by an author who did far more for his country than anyone criticizing him here, are a good reminder to those who have forgotten that Memorial Day is not about sales, picnics and beer. Those who have lost friends and family will not forget, but many have.

Memorial Day isn’t for the living veterans, so no, we wouldn’t.

42 year old Oklahoma born, well traveled civi. Never heard anyone say that ever. His point is very valid, title of the article... needs help... perhaps. Gotta be an insinsetive a$$ or completely aloof to say that in Sooner (and OK State) country. God bless Mr O’Neill and all our vets. Multiple family members included. Love this country!

I respect his service but once he opens his trap and decides to be a public advocate, then he is fair game.

We've some on FR who open their trap and then whine because someone responds in a manner they do not approve of.

I agree. I would be very surprised if 60% of kids knew what Memorial Day is about.

Have you ever PERSONALLY heard anyone say “Happy Memorial Day” to another human being?

Does Donald Trump tweeting "Happy Memorial Day" count?

Bingo. Last year before church our pastor asked that I read some chosen words and then he was going to ask any vets present to stand. I said “no.” I’ll read something else and then remind people this is the day to honor the “some who gave all,” not the living, vet or otherwise. He’s like, “Ohhh. I never thought about it that way.” He was grateful for the clarification. After my schpiel, a few people came to me, said the same thing and thanked me for straightening them out. While I’m glad the respect for our active military and vets has come up to new heights, I sometimes have mixed feelings about some people who’d never sacrifice their easy lives for anything yet clamor to say they know a vet because it’s cool.

“If I had shot Bin Laden, I would probably manage to work it into a lot of conversations.”

On the thread about Alan Bean, Astronaut that recently died, there was a link to a comedy routine by Brian Reagan. Talking about at a party, and everybody is trying to outdo each other with their stories.

“You know - I wish I had been one of the 12 guys that walked on the moon. Let the guy talk about his international business trips in his private jet, driving his Bugatti on the autobahn.”

“Yeah - I walked on the moon. Drove on the Sea of Tranquility. Was worried about going too fast and then thought “Silly me - I’m the ONLY one up here!!”

Shooting Bin Laden would do just as well I think.

The OP would have been TS. We did not talk about a single MACVSOG TS OP for over 30 plus years when we were told this/that was declassified. I bet Captain Larry Bailey cannot stand these punks.

I don’t talk about a lot of things I did because they were classified at the time, and as far as I know, still are. Besides, it doesn’t mean very much now.

Memorial Day is ONLY for the Fallen in wartime.

Veterans’ Day is for those who have served, in peacetime or in war, living or deceased.

Armed Forces Day is for those who are currently serving.

I noticed that no one on FR criticized Trump for saying the very thing that was discussed here.
