Who betrayed Anne Frank? Book claims to shed new light {Nazis alerted by Jewish collaborator}

A new book has provided what it claims is fresh evidence that Anne Frank and her family were betrayed by a Jewish woman who was executed after the second world war for collaborating with Nazis.

The mystery of how the Franks were found in a secret annex in a building on Amsterdam’s Prinsengracht in August 1944 has thwarted formal investigations and troubled academics ever since.

The involvement of Ans van Dijk, who was executed in 1948 after admitting to collaborating in the capture of 145 people, including her own brother and his family, had been previously claimed. But, the Anne Frank House museum and research centre had been unable to come to any conclusion, despite police investigations and its own studies.

..It is claimed that after her arrest on Easter Sunday 1943 by the Nazi intelligence service known as the the Sicherheitsdienst, Van Dijk became a regular visitor to the building, albeit in disguise. She would also use the telephones in the requisitioned offices, Kremer noticed.

The book suggests that in early August 1944, Kremer overheard Van Dijk taking part in discussions in the Nazi offices on Prinsengracht, where the Franks were hiding. The Franks were arrested on 4 August, while Van Dijk was said to have left for The Hague.

..After the war, Van Dijk moved to The Hague, where she was arrested at a friend’s home on 20 June 1945. Two years later she was charged on 23 counts of treason and brought to the special court in Amsterdam, where she confessed on all counts, and was sentenced to death.

Her attempts to appeal the decision and gain a royal pardon on the grounds that she had acted out of self-preservation failed. In January 1948 she was executed by firing squad at Fort Bijlmer, in Amsterdam

It was a horrible time - to chose between betraying people and suffering in a horrific way.

I don’t think the Jewish collaborator should have been executed. There were German war criminals who served a few years and were released, and it wasn’t like they committed war crimes under threat of execution.

Coming on 90-years old, time will soon settle his debt. Greater inquiring mind questions about Soros are; WHO pulled his strings before he became puppet master? Aside from his children, WHO have been his star pupils over the past 20-30 years? Students have been known to surpass their teachers.

I am curious. We’re the Frank’s included in her 20 counts of treason? If so, I am not understanding why there is such trouble accepting that she was responsible for giving away the Feank’s Location /hiding place.

It seems possible to me that the Nazis made this woman a "silver or lead" kind of offer when she was arrested in 1943...kinda like what the Mexican drug cartels do with police, etc.

If that's what happened one could argue that she wasn't entirely culpable for her actions.

Many moons ago I was forced to go see an amateur production of A Diary of. Young Girl. It was so bad that when the Nazis showed up. People in the audience yelled. “They’re in the attic!”.

I don't think the Jewish collaborator should have been killed.

WHAT???? I thought Israel searched all four corners of the globe searching for people involved in the slaughter, including young prison guards who were following orders. Betraying ones own people is as bad as it can get.

Dunno. Soros said his collaboration with Nazis was the most exciting time of his life.

I agree they shouldn’t have been executed.

They should have been put in a crowded cell and not fed until they died.

Because that’s what they did to my family.

Was this collaborator given a choice between betraying her people or being tortured and killed? It's hard to say what we would do if we were given a similar choice.

FWIW, I fear I would be a coward and expect the punishment it brought.

Many had that choice and took lead.

You've mentioned in this thread that you lost family members in the camps. That most assuredly gives you an understanding of the Holocaust that I,and at least some like me,lack.

However,I'd just say in relation to this *particular* woman that,if she and/or members of her family were,in fact, threatened by the Boches then that differentiates her from those who enthusiastically helped them.

I've seen it written that there's evidence that at least a few of the people who dropped to the ground at the World Trade Center were *pushed* by people desperate to get air at the windows as chocking smoke enveloped them.

I've never claimed to be the most courageous or loyal guy who's ever walked this earth but I hope that in a desperate situation I wouldn't betray anyone,of any religion or nationality,to the likes of the Nazis. But I cannot say with 1000% certainty that I wouldn't if my survival,or the survival of my loved ones, was at stake.

If,knowing that, your attitude toward me is "F him" I guess I'll have to accept that.

A lot of people have been suggested over the years from an ordinary burgler to one of Mr. Frank’s associates in the spice business. I don’t think we’ll ever know. I’d rather focus on the lovely Dutch people who sheltered Anne’s family.

Life Magazine has a beautiful special edition on Anne Frank. I picked it up at the checkout counter - wonderful photos of Anne!

I'm looking at your nick and knowing which choice Jesus made.
