Democrats pitch a new 'better' plan to 'drain the swamp'

How can Democrats attack President Donald Trump this midterm season without getting swept up in and drowned out by his personal controversies?

It's a question that has confounded party leaders, individual candidates, outside groups and activists across the liberal spectrum. Now, as the elections near, Democrats on Capitol Hill think they are getting closer to cracking the code.

On Monday, they will introduce a new suite of anti-corruption proposals and "democracy reforms" designed to hammer at a variety of allegations of unethical behavior and investigations swirling around the Trump administration and team, from a personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, accused of trading on his access to the President, to cabinet officials like EPA administrator Scott Pruitt, who Democrats accuse of having actively sought to undermine their own agencies' missions.

The initial rollout of "A Better Deal," in 2017, was met with polite applause from progressive Democrats, who were pleased to see the party highlight an economic justice agenda.

"We think this (new rollout) caffeinates, makes stronger and reinforces, all the other messages that are part of 'The Better Deal,'" Sarbanes said. "'A Better Deal for our Democracy' is telling people that we want to find a way to give them their institutions back and make their voice count again."

That means encouraging policy points like automatic voter registration, countering state laws Democrats believe are purpose-built to disenfranchise those already or trying now to get on the rolls, shining new light -- and toughening enforcement -- on dark money groups and, ultimately, reversing the effects of the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision with new legislation.

This is why last week Willie Brown, Jimmie Kimmel et al said we have to not be mean - they know President Trumps programs are selling and they want in on the action.

All of this from the party of this man, who basically wrote the book on corruption and other very bad behaviour in government.

How they try to do this without seeming hypocritical will be interesting to watch.

From a recent Dr. Walter Williams column comes the following wisdom:
"The Founding Fathers held a deep abhorrence for democracy and majority rule. In fact, the word democracy appears nowhere in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. In Federalist No. 10, James Madison wrote, 'Measures are too often decided, not according to the rules of justice and the rights of the minor party, but by the superior force of an interested and overbearing majority.' John Adams predicted, 'Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.' Edmund Randolph said, 'That in tracing these evils to their origin, every man had found it in the turbulence and follies of democracy.' Chief Justice John Marshall observed, 'Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.'"
Perhaps now is the time to re-read these reminders from the persons who actually understood that the Constitution of the United States of America structured a form of self-government known as a "Republic"--rejecting at the same time that form, till then, known as a "democracy."

Thanks for reminding us of that, Dr. Williams!

Certainly the deepest, murkiest parts.

But the Swamp is one nasty, funky bipartisan place.

And, just to irritate folks who abhor the name, it turns out that John Birch was basically correct about a LOT of stuff.

When you’r up to your a$$ in alligators, it’s hard to remember that all you wanted to do is drain the swamp.

He could get his hitman off with probation for meditated murder in Texas and not have any of it splash back on him. I don’t even think the Clintons could be that bold.

Sadly, Slim Pickens’ pocket knife from 1941 may be unretrievable in some movie buff’s collection.

In other words, register illegal aliens allowing them to vote, get rid of voter id laws, and allow untraceable debit cards for Democrats like Obama used.

Crocodiles eating each other may be great entertainment but the swamp will still be a swamp, only with fewer but larger crocodiles.
And that's only for a little while.
