Metal detector at this single entrance. Can we posit a scenario here? A violent teen with lethal firearm under trench coat will:
a. Wait patiently in line with 1,000 or 2,000 fellow students or
b. Blow the metal detector guy away before storming the school in a hail of bullets.

Neither of those, as he has sitting ducks in a row for easy mass assassination. He just sits and waits until he is ready to open fire.

I agree with R2 here. Not every teacher should be carrying. If you’ve ever worked in that business, not all of them are rational, and many have no business being around kids.

‘Allow’ allows those with an interest and inclination to carry to do so. You don’t need many to set up an effective deterrent - 5 to 10 percent of the teachers would do nicely.

Those that do could earn a little more as an incentive. They could also be required to drill once a quarter. Give an allowance for practice rounds and a mandatory number of range sessions to keep their qualification. They could be issued rubber bullets instead of regular bullets. Good stopping power without the collateral damage. You might be able to get that number up to 25%.

Shotguns with beanbag rounds are pretty good too.

“Most of my high-school teachers should not have been trusted with sharp pencils, let alone a firearm.”

Most of my teachers were the same way, but back then we didn’t have these shootings. If you had a beef with someone you went out behind the school face to face and fought it out.

Going back to your comment above, my son’s teacher this year I wouldn’t trust with a wad of Play Doh

You’re assuming they (school shooters) possess intelligence. 8>)

“The local police made 39 trips to his Parkland home because of his violent and erratic behavior.

Need to pass a background check to buy a weapon? No problem:

I wouldn’t trust teachers - mainly because they are at work in a classroom and not on patrol.

And so many of them are progressive weenies, too.

Quit fooling around and arm the teachers like the Israelis did 40 years ago. There are no more school shootings in Isreal now. It is the only thing that works.

Follow Israel’s lead: Israel armed their teachers and has provided armed security since 1974.

There are no assaults in Israel’s schools!

Actually, I think cameras on entrances and most smaller schools having only one entrance would help. Honestly. If you have to get main entrance and there are cameras there, it would help even the armed teachers or staff see something suspicious coming and be on alert. Even if a guard was shot first. You’d see it.

Have the kids arrive at different times and it would be one help.

Armed concealed employees and one visibly armed guard too.
