“The Surveillance State is not only here, it is living next door.”
And smarter than it used to be. In the 1970’s some big city police departments touted snitch hotlines, usually with posters of two beady eyes staring from behind a revolver muzzle, and the slogan, “And you don’t have to give your name!” to report someone having an “illegal” firearm.
Well, the hotlines were quickly flooded with tips from people interested in settling scores with their neighbors rather than public safety, and they were quietly withdrawn. A signed complaint or police report became the norm.
Apparently the burden of proof has been greatly lightened now. Under a Red Flag law, “concerned citizen” goes to a cop and states, “he has guns, he’s been acting erratically, he threatened me, and I’m afraid for my life!”
Cop goes to judge who issues a Gun Violence Restraining Order, and gun owner who has no idea what’s going on without his knowledge (`due process? we don’ need no steenking due process’) suddenly finds the police are at his door to seize his guns.
The laws usually state the seizure is for no more than 21 days yadda yadda yadda. Yeah, right. Again, gun owner has no opportunity to confront his accuser unless he hires a lawyer.
Google “GVRO abuse” and see what you find. In a word, scary.
That boy’s mouth looks like an anal sphincter.
