Veterans' grass-roots movement shares health benefits of marijuana
CNN ^ | April 28th, 2018 | By Jen Christensen

(CNN)To get away from the memories of war in Afghanistan -- the violence, the unexpected danger, the rush of adrenaline and the hypervigilance that can come with post-traumatic stress disorder -- Aaron Newsom started gardening.

Since World War II, generations of veterans have found healing in horticulture. Digging in the dirt did that for Newsom, but the Marine, who served in an attack helicopter squadron, wanted more. He wanted to share this healing feeling with service members who may never even touch a spade, and he had an idea.

In addition to the public gardening he was doing in Santa Cruz County, California, Newsom kept a secret garden in his home. "I grew medical cannabis for myself in my spare bedroom. I didn't tell anyone for at least a year," he said. "When I finally told my mom and dad, with my dad being so conservative, I thought they'd freak out, but they were both totally supportive, because I was growing it for the right reasons."

Newsom, 35, felt that the plant was a good replacement for the opioids and other drugs the Department of Veterans Affairs doctors put him on for PTSD and severe arthritis. "On those drugs, it wasn't the quality of life that I wanted," Newsom said. "With medical cannabis, I had such great success. I could regulate myself and my hypervigilance, and I was able to get off those other pills."

Here's a link to the referenced American Legion survey.

I encourage Free Republic's drug warriors to take up their objections with them. And their families.

Let people take any drugs they want, and let them be personally responsible for it also.

"Think it's harmless? Now nine in ten teens at drug clinics are being treated for marijuana use

"Cannabis is responsible for 91 per cent of cases where teenagers end up being treated for drug addiction, shocking new figures reveal.

Supporters of the drug claim it is harmless, but an official report now warns the ‘increased dominance of high-potency herbal cannabis’ – known as skunk – is causing more young people to seek treatment."

Better watch out for that skunk!

It’ll hide in your closet, or under your bed. As soon as you fall asleep, it’ll get you.

Just ask any person who is not stupid. They will tell you it is so.

I have no objections. Humans have been altering their sobriety since humans were created. They will never stop. It’s not so horrible.

And cannabis is a wonderful plant. Medicinally it does work for many things. I do not like getting high so I take it in CBD form and it greatly reduces chronic pain without me altering sobriety. I want to think CLEARER, not muddier. And I have no problems thinking clearly. Though I still can’t do higher order math very well. Lol.

We use a lot of herbs at my house for various things. The side effects are nothing compared to the horrible ones some drugs have.

The drug warriors scream and moan about pot, but usually have nothing to say about the pharmacy drugs that kill 10s of thousands every year.

And destroy even more lives than that.

Opioids. Benzodiazapines. SSRIs.

And don’t even get me going on the deadliest, most abused drug of all. Alcohol.

Grass roots. Groan!

As a Christian of the crazy variety, I’ve believed the bible dictum that sin is in souls, not in consumable items. If we should get our lives rid of everything that can be sinned with, we would have to commit suicide because even our bare bodies can be sinned with.

We used to have marijuana as a medicine. It was politics, not science or even the art of medicine, that excluded it from that category. Should it be used for sinful reasons, such as altering the consciousness with the purpose of approaching ungodly spirits? No. But this is a sin question.

Well, except until they do, and then the result are things like well-intended “wars on opiates” that make it hard for Grandpa to get both his pain pills and sleeping pills, no matter that he’s expected to go into that good night within a couple of years. We can’t let him mercifully go gently into it.

“We can’t let him mercifully go gently into it.”

Well-intentioned or not.

Opioids, Benzodiazapines, SSRIs and Alcohol are all mind-altering drugs and intoxicants.

And should be in the same category as pot.

Israel has been on to this for years. Of course, Veteran care is a bit more of a priority there since, well, everyone is a Veteran.

yeah, and I fondly remember my parents, both WW2 vets, relaxing at home smoking weed after the trauma of war....

and they collected sooo much money for PTSD too....

oh wait....no I guess they didn't...they came home got married, started a family, worked like dogs for their 6 kids and were good citizens....

but I guess WW2 didn't have any horror in it...afterall, all those GI's would be getting fat disability for their PTSD....

“What part of the article do you disagree with?”

You posted it without any critical analysis. As if it was both relevant and true.

The truth is that a minor caught with weed in England is ordered by the courts to these rehab factories, paid by the NHS. That’s why you get the number 91%.
