There’s a strong libertarian presence on this site, which favors marijuana legalization.

As we moved to legalize recreational drug use, I’ve noticed that nobody wants to talk about whether marijuana is harmful in any way, or whether it is a gateway drug.

It seems as if the debate has shifted, and we are told that since alcohol is legal and cigarettes are legal, then .
marijuana also should be legal.

I’m not saying that I’m either in favor of or against marijuana legalization. I’m just observing how the debate and discussion of the issue has evolved.

I wish I had never smoked it; it screwed up my path of life.

The legalities are strange, but I believe that society deserves to know who uses it and who does not, especially employers. If you want to smoke it, fine, but you must be licensed for it and it’s a fair question for an employer to ask any applicant.

The worst I can say about it is that it can be very detrimental to motivation. Dangerous? No. Deadly? No. Nobody’s daughter smokes too much and gets raped at a party because she is dead stoned. Dead drunk, yes it happens all the time. And worse.

I don’t make light of it, but I will also call bs where it is due.

I’ve known some brilliant unmotivated people that made nothing of their lives. And that was a waste.

Just because a person thinks it should be legal doesn’t mean they advocate its use.

“There’s a strong libertarian presence on this site, which favors marijuana legalization.”

As a recovered alcoholic, I learned that about ten percent of people that drink will become problematic because of said consumption.

Call them alcoholics, call them problem drinkers. But the only known treatment for such people, is abstinence. Not to drink.

I believe the same is likely true for Marijuana, and possibly other relatively mild drugs.

One of my father’s few regrets was giving me drinks as a teen. I liked it and started sneaking it from day one, age 15-16.

Now 24+ years clean and sober, thank God.

That’s how all immoral behavior and illegal activity gets normalized....by increments. We will continue on this downward spiral, guaranteed.

No shift - when one says marijuana should be illegal because it's harmful, one opens the door wide to the observation that alcohol and tobacco are also harmful.

Your train of thought is spot on. I don’t understand how making recreational pot legal is helpful in any way.
