In a retail establishment in NY suburbia yesterday a group of teen girls, well-dressed, intelligent, on line were speaking spanish to each other. Loudly.
“What?” Tgey asked me, looking at tgem
“You need to speak English”
“Why?”
“Because you are in The United States. The language here is English”
“We can speak any language we want! Wherever we want.”
I nodded and smiled.
You sure can, I thought.
I turned around made my purchase. Guy behind the counter looks at me nervously. I’m the problem. Place i’ve been going to since i was a kid.
Don’t worry buddy, I won’t be back.

2. I try to speak German with my kids from time to time as I believe it’s an intellectual advantage to know another language. Why can’t people converse in Spanish between themselves if they like?
