Its funny how the MSN isnt reporting on any of this. Yet they’ll drool like hell over tabloid type news.
I mean a 30 to 40% drop in N American wheat crops-as well as corn, etc isnt news?
Name me all the food stuffs made from wheat alone. Then comes corn.
Sounds like some Chinese tariffs would come in handy for US consumers this year!
With only 30 million acres that is down about 20 M to begin with and then with a lower average yield that is going to make a huge difference.
We have 80 acres of beardless wheat for hay but if the price goes high we could combine it. Hay is really at a premium too though.
The costs of Harvesting it, transporting it, milling it, etc. are already included in the 5 cents, or less, per loaf.
I was on limited time earlier so my answer was brief and left out the one point I wanted, but couldn’t, make.
That is that no matter the cost of the wheat to make the bread all the other cost generally stay almost exactly the same. So it the cost of wheat more than doubles from 5 cents to 12 cents, the loaf should only go up 7 cents to cover the additional cost.
In real life that doesn’t happen. The bakery, using the big focus on the big increase costs of the wheat, raises the price by a lot more.
It’s human nature to do that, and with time, competition brings things back in line.
The coming global cooling is going to be a real challenge.
I hope it isn’t a deadly challenge.

Bakers are not the only ones who purchase wheat for food stuffs. And you 5 cent cost is off. The price of wheat will double this year. Why? Because India has already lost 80% of their wheat crop. Australia remains to be seen. Argentina the same, although their soybean crop has about failed creating a global shortage of soybeans. But soybeans can be planted late and produce so I expect that the shortage will be picked up by the USA farmers. Canada has already lost a good portion of its wheat crop. Russia, although they have been the largest producer the past year, can see a failure, who the hell wants to deal with them bastards. Its been reported, that China’s crops are not very good.
By this time next year, if the global predictions on the weather remains, the price of wheat will be at or about 10 bucks a bushel. Corn? Its depends on when they can get on the fields to plant. Its already late and most states outside of TX and NC havent showed nearly any per cent of planting yet.
Just lets wait till the end of this month and see what it looks like. I hope I am wrong, or we are all wrong, because there will be famine and when there is famine, war isnt far behind.

BTW just so you know. My cousin was head of the Akron CO field research station for years.
He wrote research pieces on plains farming and testified in front of the Ag committee in Washington DC and Co state assembly on the terrible farming methods back in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.
He was proposing better irrigation methods as they saw the oncoming water shortage of the aquifer. He was trying to convince the growers to go to no till methods as the top soil is very shallow.
The result was that he was receiving death threats from them up there which resulted in driving him nuts. Not only did they threaten him, they threatened his family.
Flashback to when my mother used to say, “When I was a kid bread was a nickle a loaf”.
