At least 257 people were killed Wednesday when a military plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Algeria, officials said.
Broadcasters showed images of body bags lined up in a field with mangled plane parts visible in the background.

Just awful. I have heard horror stories about what it was like flying soviet commercial aviation back in the Cold War. Don’t know if it has improved.
Soviet military aircraft were usually of a higher order of reliability than civilian equipment. The IL-76 has been used around the world by a lot of countries.
That said, it could be that there was bad maintenance; or, maybe
somebody fired a hand-held missile at it...
LOL, I fully expected that to be true...military assets were probably far more important to the government than any single Soviet commercial airliner carrying a bunch of proletariat schlubs...

In these countries with those type of aircraft, the real question that should be asked is, who of importance was on the ill-fated aircraft? Regimes, especially Arab regimes can take down an entire plane in order to eliminate a single General for example who might pose a threat to the ruling regime.
Feel good story about journalists being arrested and held for possessing secret govt papers on that same page.
Some one knew who was on the plane and took the opportunity.
The tail section was still relatively intact. They didnt come down vertical or was able to flatten out before hitting the ground.
The ugly consequences of “the ends justify the means” ideology.
