The 2018 midterm elections offer Americans a vital opportunity to check and balance the disastrous presidency of Donald Trump, to prevent Mitch McConnell from continuing to enable Trump as Senate majority leader, to finish Paul Ryans failed speakership in the House, and to end the crisis in the states created by the Republican governors who helped set the stage for Trumpism.
This election must also empower leaders who are prepared to make a truly progressive change.
This campaign season, The Nation will highlight candidates who recognize the need for issue-driven progressive politics. Heres an initial list of 10 weve got our eyes on.
Ben Jealous, Maryland gubernatorial candidate, crusading champion of voting rights and criminal-justice reform, served as director of the US Human Rights Program at Amnesty International, offers a comprehensive police reform plan to stop the killings of unarmed .
Stacey Abrams, Georgia gubernatorial candidate, championed by national organizations from Emilys List to Our Revolution. Congressman John Lewis hails Abramss work to fight voter suppression and register hundreds of thousands of people to vote.
Cynthia Nixon, New York gubernatorial candidate, echoing the appeal of Bernie Sanderss 2016 presidential bid.
Dennis Kucinich, Ohio gubernatorial candidate, who declares We must establish as a moral and political imperative, the rights of workers. The right to join a union. The right to organize. The right to strike.
Mandela Barnes, Wisconsin lieutenant governor candidate: A former state representative who was a fierce foe of Governor Scott Walkers assaults on labor rights.
Jocelyn Benson, Michigan secretary of state candidate, Southern Poverty Law Center board member, who promises to make Michigan a national model for election integrity..
January Contreras, Arizona attorney general candidate, former policy adviser to the states most recent Democratic governor, Janet Napolitano, promising to defend civil liberties and put Arizona on the side of DACA youth.
Beto ORourke, Texas US Senate candidate, a pro-choice, pro-LGBTQ-rights supporter of gun control.
Liz Watson, Indiana US House candidate, with solid support from unions , who helped develop the $15 minimum-wage bill introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders.
Scott Wallace, Pennsylvania US House candidate, the grandson of former Vice President Henry Wallace and for many years ran the Wallace Global Fund, a charity that supports womens empowerment and climate-change initiatives. Wallace says hes running to overturn the efforts of Trump and his congressional enablers.
What they have in common is what the nation is looking for in 2018: candidates who promise a transformation toward the bolder and more progressive politics of the post-Trump era.
This is what they really want.
I hope they run as a rabid Trump-haters.
There’s a Blue Wave coming!
That said....
They are running for US President, right?
McConnell and Ryan are the two progressives who have hindered the President the most.
Not one will be elected!
The Nation is an honest-to-goodness socialist rag.
Gotta respect those that speak/write/preach what they think they believe.
They’re bat-shiite crazy and wrong about nearly everything, but sometimes the smartest ones can actually make a compelling argument.
Never want to eliminate all the crazies. Have to keep some around as examples of what NOT to do and be. An easy way to expand your horizons and gather evidence for your own arguments.
Their greatest interest is in Robert Francis O’Rourke of El Paso, TX, whom many see as the immediate successor to Ted Cruz.
If candidates like the grandson of a Pro-Soviet Union Traitor like Henry Wallace is what they are banking on, I just became a bit more optimistic about our and Trump's future.
Hard to believe this name. However if he really wants to stop the killings of the unarmed encourage more folks, especially in the inner cities, to obtain carry permits for handguns.
Just liked “Trans” mean “fake” these days, “Progressive” means “fascist Commie”.

Jocelyn Benson, Michigan secretary of state candidate, Southern Poverty Law Center board member, who promises to make Michigan a national model for election integrity.
So she’s going to make them have photo ID to vote?
