History repeats itself? SC reps offer secession over guns

COLUMBIA, S.C.

South Carolina debated seceding from the Union more than 150 years ago, one of the opening salvos of the Civil War. Now, the topic has come up again, amid a national debate over firearms and gun rights.

A trio of state House Republicans on Thursday quietly introduced a bill that would allow lawmakers to debate seceding from the U.S. "if the federal government confiscates legally purchased firearms in this State."

Rep. Mike Pitts, the measure's chief sponsor, acknowledged Friday in an interview with The Associated Press that the bill has no chance of passage this year but pledged to continue to raise the issue based on what he described as a defense of the Bill of Rights.

"Without a Bill of Rights, our nation is not what it is," Pitts said. "I see a lot of stuff where people even talk about totally repealing the Second Amendment, which separates us from the entire rest of the world."

Well this retired Soldier would be happy to be recalled to active duty to show either California or South Carolina the error of their ways on succession at the point of a bayonet. As Daniel Webster said: “...Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable!”

So you’d be okay with using a weapon to take away someone else’s RIGHT to have a weapon.

Even if the succession was a result of a clear and deliberate violation by the Federal Gov’t of our enumerated rights?

Being retired military I am sure you know, more than anyone else, that once a gov’t disarms the people, tyranny always follows.

I would think that a clear violation of an enumerated right, especially the 2nd, by the Feds, breaks the contract with the states.

Countries do not stay together forever, and the people of this country are now so diametrically opposed to each other that a separation might be the best thing (if it can be done peacefully) in the future.

I would hope you would reconsider you position if a future President of the neo-Marxist persuasion would use the courts or executive orders to institute confiscation (and use Hitler/Stalin tactics) ... and states respond by succeeding from the union.

Union for the sake of “Union” is not worth it if it means subjugation of liberties to the “State” as was done by many tyrants in the 20th century.

Do you think the secession would stop with California?

And yet, I can’t legally carry in SC because they have no reciprocity with MS....can supposedly transport it in SC if it is in a locked compartment or a locked container...

Federal bayonet “law enforcement” is not enforcement....it is tyranny...now as it was in 1865.

The orginal Confederates were enthusiastic practitioners of gun control against southerners who remained loyal to the Union.

Laughing so hard it hurts. So proud of SC for standing up for 2A, hadn’t thought about it putting Linda out of a job in DC - everybody wins!

Moved to S.C. several years back. It put my life into perspective very quickly. I'm only sorry I didn't move down sooner. It's nice to breathe the air like a freeman.

Self-reliance. Self-respect. Looking straight ahead, proud for once not looking down at the ground for my mama's tit.

By God, I love this place.

“Wow. Since I’m in plans to move south to live I wonder what is going to happen? I don’t think Yankees have the fortitude to put up with going to war!”

Ain’t gonna be a civil war. However, that’s not to say there won’t be civil disobedience, perhaps on a large scale in certain areas. The military and most rank and file LEO’s of various stripes are conservative. They’re not gonna fire on parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, other relatives, friends and neighbors. Obama knew this. Remember his little shown speech where he stated, paraphrasing from memory; “we can no longer depend on the military, we need our own force that is just as strong and well armed as our military.....

I could see a civil war erupting in this country again. Maybe not in my lifetime but I could see it.

States that obey the constitution need to stay in. We need to find a way to kick out the states that don’t.

The same sort of army Castro raised- a howling mob of young men armed with baseball bats, rocks, and rebar. They went out looking for “the wealthy” and others who were considered a threat to socialism.

The Cuban targets were not armed, for the most part, but in the USA, few armed individuals could handle a crowd of 200 throwing gasoline bombs. You’d get many, but probably not enough.

Waco- Ruby ridge-

Anyone showing civil disobedience will be labeled as ‘extremists’ ‘terrorists’ etc and the government will use it as an excuse to use force

Right. Because we aren't a union of sovereign states, we're just a bunch of provinces of a country called these United States.
