Larry Kudlow, China Push Time-to-Talk Message Amid Trade Tension

The U.S. and China indicated they’re willing to negotiate on escalating frictions, helping to ease fears among investors that a tit-for-tat trade dispute could derail the strongest global expansion in years.

The White House’s National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow spent much of the day Wednesday trying to calm markets after the two countries announced tariffs, and said they still have time work out their differences.

“Remember, none of the tariffs have been put in place yet. These are all proposals,” he said in a brief interview, without specifying if talks are planned or how they’d take place. “We’re putting it out for comment. There’s at least two months before any actions are taken. China by the way did not enact the tariffs.”

China’s ambassador to the U.S., Cui Tiankai, also said his first choice would be to consult the U.S. over trade. “Negotiations would still be our preference, but it takes two to tango,” he said. “We’ll always stand for consultation and negotiation, but if others do things in the wrong direction, we’ll have to respond.”

The comments came after China early on Wednesday said it would levy an additional 25 percent tariff on about $50 billion of U.S. imports. The move matched the scale of proposed U.S. tariffs announced the previous day. The U.S. is allowing 60 days for public feedback and hasn’t specified when the tariffs would take effect, leaving a window open for talks.

U.S. stocks opened sharply lower on Wednesday, but reversed course and ended the day higher as investors speculated the spat wouldn’t spiral out of control. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index jumped 1.5 percent as of 8:12 a.m. London time while futures on the S&P 500 Index rose 0.5 percent to the highest in more than two weeks.

Tariffs now! 30 years is long enough! I wish Kudlow would quit. He is just another Free Traitor™.

Isn’t it amazing what a strong backbone, do-it-right President can accomplish!

Wimping out barack style was the worst thing to do and he really didn’t care what he did to this country or to the people... as long as he had his mansion among the elite global power.

Lou Dobbs attacked him last night. Trump unintentionally hires people who are determined to change HIM rather than carry out Trump’s vision for America.

I like this guy a lot. He made Cavuto yesterday look like the anti-Trump @sshat that he is.

Why can’t anyone in the media look at this realistically and state the fact that China puts tariffs or taxes etc on everything we sell over there, Europe does too.

Agree 100%.

Without a strong and vibrant middle class there is no MAGA, plain and simple.

Maybe if Larry didn’t kill so many brain cells over the years he could grasp that simple concept.

This President surely knows the value of a middle class earning respectable wages, as he has talked about it many times. Have Kudlow clean the windows or something.

China can’t do anything. They need the US. They will throw out a lot of bluster for the media. But they cannot sell our bonds. They cannot buy fewer US products. If they do then their yuan goes much higher. China needs to buy our stuff to stop their currency from hitting the ceiling. A very strong yuan makes Chinese products go up in price the same as if the tariffs go into affect. The US should do whats right for the US. And understand that China will just deal with it afterwards. Our media is on the side of China.
