I’ve considered .458 SOCOM, but not sure I want to spend that much on the ammo. When I want to spend 1 to 3 bucks (or more) a round for cartridges, I prefer to spend it on the long guns like 30.06, 300 WinMag, or .338 Lapua.
When I shoot AR-15, I practice a lot and mostly defensive, inside 100 yds. Inside of 100 yards there is no real advantage to spending more on ammo than necessary. For long range shooting my pace is much slower, so I can justify the greater per round expense, and I will spend more for a good high velocity heavier grain HPBT to get the results I want at 300-1000 or more yards. I ‘could’ shoot the AR out to 400 or 500 yards, but most of my AR-15 uppers are set up for in close (red dots vs scopes).
BTW I have come to love the AR set up for 9mm. I can take that and my Glock out to the range (<100 yrds), a single ammo box of 9mm for feeding both (very convenient), and do all the skills and have fun. Highly recommend trying a good side charger for the pistol caliber AR’s. Very effective as a home defense rifle if you live in a place with neighbors and don’t want to velocity of a .223 round inside the house. Loads of fun to shoot.
I appreciate your remarks about the AR in 9mm. I'll have to give consideration to this!
Thanks for the reply! Best FRegards!
