Turkey will face sanctions over its deal to buy the Russian S-400 air defence system, according to Turkish daily Evrensel.

The report comes as U.S. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Tina Kaidanow, who heads the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs at the State Department, was in Ankara to attend the 5th gathering of Turkey - U.S. Defence Trade Dialogue, following a 2-year hiatus

Top of the agenda was an offer to sell Turkey the Patriot missile system as an alternative to the S-400. Previous negotiations over Patriots have stalled over issues such as the price and technology transfer.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said last week that Turkish efforts to buy the Patriot system  would continue, but added, “These are not an alternative to the S-400. Turkey has already made its S-400 decision."

However, since the Turkish deal to buy S-400s, the U.S. Congress has adopted laws that could see Turkey facing sanctions  over the deal. Russia has meanwhile accelerated efforts  to deliver S-400s to Turkey.

This is one of the more reliable Turk news sources. It must be coming from outside of Turkey.

I've read it is written by X-pat Turks. There are no longer journalists inside Turkey, all that are left inside Turkey are government approved Propaganda agents.

NATO will be forced to deal with this clear shift away from NATO that Erdogan the Islamist has taken in Turkey.

Russia had recently been proving itself to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Çevik said.

“In recent times, Russia has been proving itself to our president. It has shown a good performance, as well. My personal grade is 10 out of 10,” he said.

This is worse than a diplomatic spat or anger at a disloyal customer, this is confirmation that the US believes the S-400 system works as advertised by Russia.

yup - it also signals everyone else to start discreetly loosening ties with us, especially reliance on SWIFT and dollar transactions.

There is a distinct possibility that Gas and oil pipelines through Syria/Turkey to Southern Europe will never be established without complete Turkish/Russian control.

Russia will retain control of all Ukrainian and Northern European pipelines, and North Sea supplies will be disastrously insufficient.

The only other option is European supply by tankers from the US, impossible now, and incredibly expensive to build.

If Turkey specifies other than Western Banking (SWIFT) to transfer payment for pipeline transported products, there will be serious realignment of most of the World's Banking, and George Soros will be very sad.

As will the Deep Swamp.

I’m pretty sure Israel just proved it didn’t over Iran and Syria. I could be wrong but I believe I read the S400 could not see or target the f35’s.

All measures have counter measures. There is no doubt the US has more technical expertise than Russia.

That does not mean that Russians are dummies. They are not.

Israel just proved that the Russian techs did not switch to targeting frequencies while observing an action between Israel and Iran.

We do not know the reason that the Russian techs did not target the Israeli aircraft.

The reason may well be the particularly good relations between Russia and Israel.

Looks like Turkey is in the process of Strategic re-alignment, from the West, to Russia/China.

Kind of a big deal.

check out the latest news on zero hedge - chinese start paying for oil only in yuan starting June 1st.

I can guarantee that useful alternatives to SWIFT are coming quickly. SWIFT is the only way we can enforce sanctions. It’s a huge billy club.

Once there are useful alternatives to SWIFT, kiss dollar reserve currency goodbye. It will take 20 years of pain to dedollarize world trade, but the pain will start immediately.

What is the effect if Washington needs to pay 6% on its debt instead of 1 1/2% ?

What is the effect of Washington can not run budget deficits ?

Do you think Russia is playing with Turkey?

No, I think Russia is finding common interests with Turkey.

Take the Kurds as an example, they have no common interests with Russia, and they have not offered to create any.

Turkey, on the other hand has significant common interests in trade with Russia, and has learned how to offer them.

But the most important Russian interest is to prevent a gas pipeline to Southern Europe bypassing Russian control.

Turkey has offered this to Russia, the common part is Turkey will get a transit fee, probably better than the EU would pay them if the US controlled that pipeline.

Additionally, Russia does not require Turkey to Kiss NATO ass, or EU ass, or French ass, or German ass, or Brit ass, or US ass, or even Kurd ass.

All Erdogan has to do is put up with Assad getting most of his territory back, not really hard to do considering past relations.

Of course the US could change this dynamic by simply opening fire on Turkish Troops.
