EPA poised to announce rejection of Obama vehicle fuel efficiency rules

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to use a Virginia car dealership on Tuesday as the setting to tout its rejection of the Obama administration’s landmark vehicle fuel efficiency rules, a move that could put automakers in the middle of a battle between the Trump administration and California.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt plans to sign a declaration by Sunday that the Obama administration’s vehicle efficiency rules for 2022 through 2025 are “not appropriate” and must be revised, Reuters reported last week.

Pruitt is expected to speak at an event at a Chevrolet dealership in suburban Washington and will joined by groups representing dealers and automakers, according to people familiar with the plans.

The state of California, which has the power to effectively create its own fuel economy standards, several allied states and environmental groups are gearing up for a legal and political fight over the rules, aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions from new cars and trucks.

WOW! My next car might not look like a plumbing factory under the hood? Excellent.

IMHO, 30 MPG for cars and 25 MPG for trucks is a reasonable goal engineering and price wise.

Electric cars? Need better battery technology before they will be practical.

Looks like a Toyota RAV 4 made to look like a (not so) Smart car. Notice the Toyota logo on the left rear wheel.

Auto makers need to build one or two Kalifornia approved vehicles in their line up and build the rest for the rest of the country. Then everyone in Kali could drive the same “peoples cars”. Or they could throw the bums out.

Cripes, in less than an hour on the freeway my 2013 V-6 Honda Accord hits 40mpg at 70mph on cruise control. Great power and fuel efficiency is already rewarded in the free market!

Does VW get all the money back?

Volkswagen has admitted to circumventing the emissions control system in about 550,000 vehicles sold in the United States since 2008 with the 2.0-liter diesel engine. As many as 11 million vehicles worldwide may be affected.
