This is a great paper by Rami Ginat and Uri Bar-Noi (2007) on the Soviet Union's support for terrorism, specifically among the Palestinians, which was distinctly non-linear, though important from the 1970s.
The Soviets and the Captive Nations were important in #Israel surviving the attempt to destroy her at birth in 1947-48, but it was done on traditionally cynical Soviet reasoning: to create a problem they could then offer to solve, enhancing their power/prestige in the process.
