Cannabinoids are easier on the brain than booze, study finds [no brain damage from long-term use].

"To combat this misconception in the existing literature, the researchers gave a fresh look at some existing neurological imaging data from the MRIs of both adolescents and adults to see how, using the same variables and controls, the influence of cannabinoids on the brain compared to or contrasted with alcohol. "With alcohol, we’ve known it’s bad for the brain for decades," said Hutchison. "But for cannabis, we know so little."

To see any potential difference, the researchers used the data to examine the most important neurological components: gray matter and white matter.

Gray and white matter are the two main types of tissue that make up the brain and central nervous system. Gray matter is the "stuff"—the cell bodies, dendrites and axon terminals—that enable functionality. White matter, then, is how the grey matter communicates between clusters. Any loss of size or integrity in either can make the brain not work quite like it should.

The study found that alcohol use was significantly associated with a decrease in gray matter size and white matter integrity, particularly for adults who may have decades of exposure. Marijuana and associated cannabinoid products, on the other hand, were not shown to have any long-term impact on the amount of gray matter in the brain or on the integrity of the white matter."

Maybe the brain damage occurred prior to the cannabis use...

It’s really more harmful on the lungs and to people with mental illness.

I take it that this “study” has NOTHING to do with the fact that it comes out of a college in a state that has legalized “grass”. /sarc

U of C? Think of the tax money the state is receiving from the sale of marijuana. Of course they’re gonna tout it.

I hated the effect pot had on me. It screwed with my time sense where each moment was discrete instead of part of a flow.

After a few times trying in college, never again.

“It’s really more harmful on the lungs and to people with mental illness.”

There are no studies that conclusively prove direct causation of any mental illness. Only a correlation and this is similar to how you can show the mentally ill are 300-400% more likely to use cigarettes. It does not mean the cigs caused it. Only that there is a link between mental illness and smoking.

Legalization is eliminating smoking. In states where legal, people are switching to pure oils certified for purity and dosage by labs.

You can eat it or put in an ecig with zero questionable solvents needed. Zero smell, combustion or smoke.

Cannabis naturally can be converted to pure oil without needing the solvents like for tobacco. The most organic growers simply press the flowers against 2 hot plates and filter the fluid to extract pure oil. A process called “rosining”

The long term issues with Cannabinoids probably occur at a neurotransmitter level, distorting interneuronal communication, not something that is seen on MRI’s, but rather on functional brain imaging

There’s lots of research that alcohol damages the brain. I truly believe marijuana does too. All you have to do is talk to a pot head. A couple of weeks ago a recreational pot user I know did an hilarious impression of a pothead she encountered. Maybe there are no changes in the white/gray matter of pot users; maybe the changes are in brain chemicals, neuron synapses, etc.

This area of study will be similar to Global Warming — hard to trust any analysis because everyone has an axe to grind and there’s money to be made.

I think waiting some years and looking at ancillary data might be fruitful — rate of car accidents, rate of mental illness, rate of HS and College graduation. For states which have legalized it, are any of these numbers trending in a distinct way in opposition to rates in states where it is not legalized?

The fallout data will be less tainted, I think.
