Fielding questions over whether President Trump wants to go after Amazon and it's tax treatment, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday that Trump is "always looking to create a level playing field for all businesses and this no different." But she added that the president has no specific policies to address that at this time.
The backdrop: Axios' Jonathan Swan reported earlier today that Trump hates Amazon, which led Amazon shares to drop 6% at market open.
A LOT of jobs created by Amazon and Walmart.
I like me free 2 day shipping, I like ordering online, I like rewards programs, and I dont see any laws being broken or capitalism not in action.
If they are too big and the government thinks they are a monopoly, then they should do what they need to do.
I can live without mom and pop.
A lot of jobs are destroyed also.
Not all bad, but remember our forefathers didn’t like one corporation to have all the power.
Don’t tug on Superman’s cape Bezos....
You don’t spit into the wind. You don’t pull a mask off an old lone Ranger and you don’t mess around with Jim...
Let’s make them pay taxes like the regular stores.
Bezos went to court to prevent states from charging him sales tax that he clearly should be paying.
His ENTIRE business model is based on being 10% behind in-store retail prices based on this.
The decrement in sales tax results in higher income and property taxes as states and municipalities try to stay afloat. So he causes even MORE civic destruction with his legal tactic.
Let him pay the damn tax like everyone else and see if his business model works when he has to follow the laws too.
I had a feeling Trump was gonna get Bezos. Trump never forgot those daily hit pieces by WAPO right before the elections and after. Just shows Trump waits to spring a trap when your enemy is complacent.
So ONLY Amazon should pay sales tax on internet sales (remember Congress has allowed the internet to be sales tax free)?
Amazon does collect sales tax in states that require it - we pay sales tax on gifts we send to relatives in Minnesota, for example - and we live in Montana where there is NO sales tax.
First off, there is no “free” 2-day shipping. There is either an annual fee or a monthly fee.
Second, I try to avoid the sales tax as well, but this has been an unfair loophole advantage.
Amazon is by far NOT the lowest price out there anymore. Frankly, I have been shocked that by shopping around both online and locally that many varied products I need and buy often are cheaper elsewhere. Amazon is no longer the best price location, sometimes by a lot.
Having said all that, all my funds are getting killed! Amazon, Facebook, Tesla. Kind of a beat-down going on right now and it’s painful to watch.
His ENTIRE business model is based on being 10% behind in-store retail prices based on this.
Here's how we "level the playing field". Get rid of the sales tax in every state. Problem solved. I don't know how I benefit from having one more avenue of my personal business taxed.
I have been paying MA sales tax on Amazon for about four years.
..
Amazon found a more efficient way of moving product to the consumer. Before them it was the shopping malls, mail order, supermarkets, KMART and then Walmart. Each business model improved on the previous ones. Something better will eventually come along and take a chunk out of Amazon's business. An opportunity is there somewhere.
Stores don't pay sales taxes - they just collect them from you and pass them on the the state.
Taxing internet sales may be a good idea but it's the consumer who will pay.
We pay Californicator Taxes on every item ordered from Amazon. That has been effect for a few years.
If the states want to tax Amazon sales, they can pass laws to do so.
The entire topic of Amazon taxes even has its own Wikipedia entry - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_tax - and it’s a bit outdated but shows how complex it is.
Amazon clearly works hard to try to minimize their taxes as any business would. And because of their size, they are the biggest player in this. So they also happen to be the biggest target, and that’s natural.
For the record, I am against the Socialist concept of “income taxes” because they a) are usually progressive, i.e., penalize intiative; b) violate the 4th amendment (you can read up on that, a prior generation understood it); and c) retard economies by penalizing a nations citizens to the benefit of foreign competition. Excise taxes - i.e. sales tax - is the only fair way to tax, because they scale with economic activity.
And I’m even more against Property Taxes as practiced in America because they are a continuation of the Feudal Manor Taxes which we in America managed to break away from 240 years ago. Those were the Income taxes of their day and we don’t need two of them.
So the ONLY really legitimate tax in my mind is a sales tax. As for funding the national government, that can be accomplished by a single bill sent to each State every year and would amount to their share for being in the club known as the Union. How they get that would be up to the State legislature.
So to me, internet marketing companies working to skate on sales taxes is definitely a big no-no.
Them’s my ‘pinions, free to disagree with me.
Everything I have ordered from Amazon has had tax applied. I simply like the convenience of not fighting crowds.
Amazon already overextended themselves with the buying Whole Foods to move into groceries.
Amazon Prime customers (who already pay $100 bucks a year for “free” shipping) can get the “privileged” offer of a “Prime Pantry” program that charges an additional $18 bucks pr a $5 monthly fee for having groceries shipped. Not even specialty or fresh stuff, just a limited selection of the same dry goods you can pick up at any grocery. Quite a scam.
Amazon is a problem because sooner or later they will be the only game in town and the prices go up, up, up
