My daughter had discolored teeth, when she was in her early teens. We moved out of the city to a place where we’d had a well drilled and installed the water system. The discoloration disappeared within a few months. She’s in her twenties now and has perfect white teeth. The problem had been the added fluoride in city water. The well water solved it.
That said I was born in 1941 and our school dentist lived and had his practice in the house next to the house my parents and siblings lived in. Of course he told us how to brush our teeth, but at that time you didn't hear about flossing your teeth and have the plague removed by the hygienist in the dentist office. I was 18 when I had my first cavity.

Most people call that spelling, but it’s ok. I understand. I don’t like grammar and spelling Nazis. Had enough of that for 28 years working for obsessive anal retentive people.
Got an A+ from the toughest english teach in college and on the internet, don’t much care in those settings. Not writing the great amercian (use of lower case intentional) novel.
When you say at that time YOU didn’t, I already gave you an example where hundreds of kids actually DID. That was my original point. For you to continue down the path of bad hygiene may only apply to your school or childhood. That’s my point.

That said of course I have my teeth cleaned regularly
