Coongressional leaders have finalized a sweeping $1.3 trillion budget bill that substantially boosts military and domestic spending but leaves behind young immigrant Dreamers, deprives President Donald Trump some of his border wall money, and takes only incremental steps to address gun violence.
As negotiators stumbled toward an end-of-the-week deadline to fund the government or face a federal shutdown, House Speaker Paul Ryan dashed to the White House amid concerns Trumps support was wavering. Although some conservative Republicans balked at the size of the spending increases and the rush to pass the bill, the White House said the president backed the legislation.
Trump himself sounded less than enthused, tweeting late Wednesday: Had to waste money on Dem giveaways in order to take care of military pay increase and new equipment.
Talks had stretched into Wednesday evening before the 2,232-page text was finally released.
No bill of this size is perfect, Ryan said. But this legislation addresses important priorities and makes us stronger at home and abroad.
Leaders hoped to start voting as soon as Thursday. A stopgap measure may be needed to ensure federal offices arent hit with a partial shutdown at midnight Friday when funding for the government expires.
Negotiators have been working for days and nights on details of the bill, which is widely viewed as the last major piece of legislation likely to move through Congress in this election year. Lawmakers in both parties sought to attach their top priorities.
Two of the biggest remaining issues had been border wall funds and a legislative response to gun violence after the clamor for action following recent school shootings, including the one in Parkland, Florida.

They arent afraid for their primaries yet. They arent afraid for their re-election yet. They need to be fearful that they will loose their jobs.
People that see this anti-Trump work should make all their efforts count.
The RNC has sent our a stilted mailer asking loaded questions to define a Trump Agenda and get us on the RNC donation list to Advance the Trump Agenda that they will report out based upon this mailer.
Screw them.
Thanks. I don’t like these infringements (they can put someone on the “no buy” list for things that aren’t felonies), but I’m glad they didn’t deny 18-21-year-olds the ability to buy a gun. I mean, they still can’t buy a pistol, but that’s been the case since ‘68, and parents can still gift 18-to-21-year-olds a pistol in the free states.
Still includes funding for Planned Parenthood too, from what I hear...
RYAN and McConnell betray the Republican voters again.
It's only March, and these guys are basically done? Without a doubt, Congress is a mess.
Five. The rest of the fiscal year.
Even under Reagan there was plenty of pork to go around, always has been, always will be. There are 49 Democratic Senators and the very nature of the Senate is that it is all about compromise and get along to go along, 51/49 R/D doesn't change that; even 60/40 and those 60 Rs would still need favors from Ds for pet projects.
‘Politics is the art of the possible’; imagine what this would have looked like if Hillary had won.
I remember this!
I was there. I think!
This is a bunch of horseshit. Oh we have to pass all this stuff right now or the government will shutdown, and we had no choice but to put all this leftist crap in it because baby deer and Bambi and blah, blah, blah.
Had it.
If Trump signs this crap, then he is also status-quo.
Make them do their job, or shut it down.
No more omnibus. No more.
Just say “NO”
This is one behemoth Trump has not even begun to scratch, this profligate spending and debt piling. Republicans are no more frugal than the Dems anymore.
One of the reasons for much of the spending is to get Dem votes so a few Republicans CANNOT stop it.
And Trump will sign it.
This is a perfect example of why we need LINE ITEM VETO power for the President.
President Trump.......time to exercise your authority to VETO
There’s no way to stop it after the excesses of x43 and the time-bombs of x44.
How fast we’ll get there remains to be seen.
You can almost hear Time, AP and Media Matters cheering.
This is NOT going to help the GOP-e
How on K-Street wrote this?
For sure it wasn’t anyone from Congress.
Any true Conservative better balk at this bill. Heck they ought to throw up a little in their mouth at this bill.
I need some clarification.
I thought the two Year Budget Deal that was signed late last year meant that we weren’t going to have to go through this process.
Isn’t that what we were told or did I just imagine it?
