A curious thing happens when you look beyond the media elation over Democrat Conor Lamb's victory in House district PA-18, which was framed as a referendum on Donald Trump's presidency. Trump won the district by 20 points in the 2016 election, and Trump lent his support to Lamb's opponent, Rick Saccone.
But Saccone was not a good candidate by many measures. Even before the election, it was public knowledge that he had been admonished by Republicans for a "sluggish campaign" and for failing to mobilize "any donor infrastructure." He was "panned as a deeply underwhelming candidate who leaned on the national party to execute a massive, multimillion-dollar rescue effort." Several Republicans echoed those sentiments more loudly after his loss.
Conor Lamb, beyond his Ivy League pedigree and military service, was inversely dynamic and engaged. He also had broad appeal to some conservatives. A campaign video featured him firing an AR-15, signifying to the public his sensible position to oppose any new restrictions on gun ownership, supporting only firmer background checks. Interestingly, this fact had the left wondering whether it should cheer his victory or fear what it portends for Democrats' future gun control efforts if he won.
Lamb also supports Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs, a big plus among Pennsylvania's working class. He even openly opposes abortion, though he also opposes any infringements upon the ability to procure an abortion. (This is a curious position that signifies he doesn't actually oppose abortion, but that's lost in the media spin.) He had such across-the-aisle appeal that Paul Ryan went so far as to say that both Lamb and Saccone "ran as conservatives."
A questionable assertion, maybe. Lamb generally held the party line on health care and immigration and called Trump's tax cuts a benefit for the wealthy.

These are the same people who were reporting that H.R. Pufnstuf Clintoon had the White House in the bag a year prior to the 2016 elections.
I put no degree of failure past the passive-aggressive GOPe, including intentionally taking a dive in the midterms for the purpose of further crippling DJT. Ryan and McConnell as leaders? Seriously?
I hope the article is right...we’ll see in November.
Reported as such, it’s nothing more than the medias “power of suggestion”. Tell them what you want them to hear.
Why? Its only March - the election hasnt happened yet!!
Laying the form doesn’t mean any concrete will get into it and make a foundation upon which to build your house. Framing a narrative doesn’t mean anybody will listen to you or believe you either, when you have zero plan or message to interest the masses.
Hegelian Dialectics!
If the Bush League Republicans think the only way to stop Trump from shutting down the Cheap Labor Express is losing one or both houses of Congress, they will do it.
Whatever it takes to steal the country from the citizens.
RINO bloodbath or MAGA Republican bloodbath? There is a difference.
Just another Scott Brown
Exactly. The GOP has or had an opportunity here to take the White working class away from the Dems in the Midwest, but they would rather go after Trump at the behest of their globalist buddies. If the Blue Dogs make a comeback, they’re toast. Look at Lamb and Moulton in Mass, and there are a bunch of Iraq and Afghanistan Vets running as Blue Dog Dems.
“Why Reports of a Coming Republican Bloodbath in November 2018 Are Premature”
Why reports of an inevitable Clinton victory in November 2016 were premature
Because it was FAKE NEWS from the purveyors of FAKE NEWS.
It’s what happens between now and November that will determine how the elections go.
The bloodbath will happen if Republicans don’t start passing bills that support their supposed platform. But certain individuals are more interested in getting rid of Trump than keeping promises. Think McCain, Mcconell, Rubio and maybe Ryan.
The rats and the media use polls to discourage competition and mobilize their own base. Polls should not be news. They’re made up.
I hate these kind of “The Repubs are still in the driver seat” stories because our side gets lethargic enough when the news ain’t so rosy....
The candidate matters.
Saccone is retired Air Force intelligence.
Obama was criticized for being able to win elections but having no coattails. I am afraid that Trump may suffer the same thing. He is one of a kind and no other politician has the stones to talk tough and fight back against the MSM.
