Saying he was defending the Constitution, a Los Gatos teacher on Sunday stood firmly behind his decision to give a student a failing grade on a quiz after she left class to join a walkout aimed at bringing attention to gun violence last week.

“Never pull a pop quiz and penalize the kids that wanted to exercise their First Amendment rights,”

His daughter should consider it one of life's lessons.

Must have a good welfare system. A friend of mine who has never worked a day in her life as far as I can see lives there.

Free Speech does not mean speech free of consequences.

She’s never been taught about “life lessons”. That’s our biggest hurdle in this. A bunch of snot nosed little shi** are being told by their parents “stand up for what YOU think is right”. No matter what the cost. Their little darlings are never wrong and never said no to.

Seems like teachers, schools or school districts should be able to call the shots on whether such a walkout will be penalized and how. Ideally, it is left to the teachers, but there may be circumstances where the policy is set at a higher level.

But there is something VERY wrong with allowing such a walkout for one political perspective’s event—and not others. It could be that students were permitted a day a year for such a protest, but isn’t that stupid? They have Saturdays and Sundays and vacation weeks and weeks in the summer for that all year long.

Some students even missing a day sets back the overall class and thus hurts the education of students overall. How nice it would be if we gave students real educations once more (in which case many wouldn’t need higher ed), and communicated by our decisions that education is a priority.

The student made a free-will choice.

Kissner denied it was a pop quiz, and said he planned it days in advance to coincide with “Pi Day,” March 14. He added he warned students that a quiz was scheduled for Wednesday.

A school day walk out... impacts very little except your grades. Ain’t that what Saturdays are for? Or Sunday prayer vigils? Or bikini clad car washes?

Must have a good welfare system.

OK,"richest on earth" may be a bit optimistic but according to Census Bureau figures the town has a per capita income of almost $75K.Even if that's by *working* residents rather than *all* residents that indicates a town not worrying about where its next meal is coming from.

Perhaps your friend is an heiress.

As teachers approach the. End of the year, they are responsible for covering material.this is a bad president to start in high schools.

Missing the quiz to stage a Bikini clad car wash for new football team uniforms would be acceptable but not much else.

No, she’s not. I don’t know how she lives because we’re separated - one of the east coast, she on the west coast.

It’s ok for the teeny bopper to exercise her First Amendment rights but not for the teacher to exercise his.

While I agree with the sentiment, the student’s grade is the student’s grade unless scoring or credit was somehow stipulated on attendance.
