An Ontario judge has rejected a Saskatchewan womans efforts to triple her spousal support two decades after her divorce, deciding instead to cut off her main source of income completely.
Kevin Choquette, a retired bank analyst worth more than $14 million, applied to the court to end the $57,000 per year in spousal support he has been paying Yvonne Choquette for 22 years. In response, Yvonne Choquette requested that her support be tripled to $180,000 per year.
In a decision published on March 1, Judge Kenneth Hood sided with Kevin Choquette, 62, explaining the reason hes stripping Yvonne Choquette, 62, of what amounts to nearly 100 per cent of her income is because shes made no effort to become self-sufficient.

But also, this highlights how arbitrary the whole thing is.
Triple it??? That could have happened. But why??
Cut if off without warning??? That did happen. But why??
It's basically: "I'm a judge. I have power. I can do anything I want."
You make good points.
Ka-ching. Of course you should support your children but you shouldn’t be forced to take care of a divorced spouse.
Especially when that spouse can take care of themselves.
I assume the kids are grown and gone, but she is just, plain lazy.
.
I know of someone who was married for almost 10 years and was required to pay his ex around $65,000 / quarter ($260,000/year) for nearly 10 years. He could afford it, but it was a big dent. Worked on Wall Street and it was a lot to him, but worth it to rid himself of her.
Several years after he was free and clear, she declared bankruptcy. No assets to speak of and was bunking with friends, no job either. I guess it all went up her nose, because I have no idea how you could spend a couple million and have NOTHING to show for it.
As an attorney I know says: He is not the judge because he is right, he is right because he is the judge.
My aunt was divorced in the early 1960’s and was getting $15K/yr in alimony. Her ex-husband paid it for 20 years and then said no more. She ran around like a damned whore for 20 years and had nothing to show for it except a good time.
Cue picture of Peg Bundy sitting on the couch eating Bon-Bons and watching Oprah.
If I’m forced to give a woman my money, for spousal support and/or child support, I get to say how its spent. Period.
$5 bucks says she was a trophy wife once.
You cant fix stupid.
You should not be forced to take care of someone you divorced.
I thank the Lord every day that I am that rare creature, the lifelong straight bachelor.
Short of debilitating illness, I can’t think of anything much worse than having to support, year after year, a manipulative, narcissistic female.
Marriage and relationships today have become a raw deal for men, and I’m glad that I’ve remained outside it all.
When she divorces you, she divorces your money too.
Works for me.
“God hates divorce”...and so do I. Please stay married.
I tend to agree with your sense of logic.
Alimony is like buying hay for a horse that ran away.
Well, good for you, but in truth you are missing out.
