Ohio student suspended for staying in class during walkouts

HILLIARD, Ohio – An Ohio high school student says he tried to remain nonpolitical during school walkouts over gun violence and was suspended for a day because he stayed in a classroom instead of joining protests or the alternative, a study hall.

Hilliard senior Jacob Shoemaker says school isn't the place for politics, and he wasn't taking sides Wednesday.

The district says it's responsible for students' safety and they can't be unsupervised. Jacob's citation for not following instructions was shared online by a friend, prompting a flood of messages to his father.

Scott Shoemaker says some people thought his son was suspended for walking out, and angry comments accumulated, including some that mistook Scott for the principal. He says he also got a couple death threats and had to consider switching phone numbers.

Why is Jacob (or any other student) not entitled to a free and public education during 'protest time'?

Why are public schools involved in staging political protests while they are being paid by taxpayers to educate children?

They percentage of the school day missed while students are escorted out of school should be subtracted from both their federal and state financial allotment.

Why didn't he just go to the study hall?

Any of the damned teachers indoctrinators who weren't in class giving lessons to those kids with sense enough to be there to receive them should be suspended for a week without pay, and the disciplinary action noted on their record.

You’ve obviously never been required to go to study hall.

It’s a form of punishment.

“Study hall” = detention for infraction

The “infraction” of being politically incorrect.

Conservatives need to start suing the crap out of the school districts. We have to fight back.

I wonder how many kids would have showed up if this event was held on a Saturday?

In other words, the “walk-out” was actually a field trip. Sponsored by the so-called “school”

.. additionally, the snot-nosed protesting tools should have to catch up on the material missed on their own time.
It'd give the little twerps something to do during their detention/s.

The walkout in my town was completely staged by the school administration. Students had little, if any, input, and had to participate unless a parent sent a note asking for them to be excused from it.

He should’ve gone to the gun range, and REALLY earned a public school suspension.

The article’s title makes it seem like the school district was wrong, very wrong. But then I read the above sentence. Yep, the kid should have been suspended. If he didn’t want to protest, good for him! But then he should have reported to the study hall, where I’m sure a teacher was present.

If a district lets a kid stay unsupervised, that district opens itself up to all sorts of lawsuits. Kids left alone can and do get into trouble.

And clueless taxpayers are paying for public schools that penalize the few students who are there to learn.

That’s how Leftists control all the institutions that we pay for.

You have to pick your fights. He had a choice, he could have gone to the Study Hall.

Why should he be forced to miss his science, math, or whatever classes for the day while the school orchestrates a protest for political purposes?

What if only one student wanted to go protest? Should they cancel classes?

His teacher and all the rest should have continued teaching.
