Republicans are panicking after a Democrat just cleaned up in a deep-red PA district

Republicans are panicked after Democrat Conor Lamb closed in on a victory over Republican Rick Saccone in a Pennsylvania congressional district that went for President Donald Trump by 20 points in 2016.

That Lamb could perform so well in a district that overwhelmingly supported Trump and had sent a Republican to Congress without much contention for the better part of two decades signaled major challenges for the party as it seeks to maintain its congressional majorities in this year's midterm elections.

"It's really hard to see how anyone looks at the factors Republicans are facing at this time, and the environment Republicans are in, and conclude anything other than that we are heading for a very difficult cycle," a Republican strategist close to the race told Business Insider.

"The narrow margin in a district the president won handily should be a serious wake up call for Republican incumbents across the map," the person added late Tuesday night. "No suburban district is safe and every candidate better be ready for the most difficult cycle of their career."

There are roughly 120 House seats currently controlled by Republicans in districts that are not as solidly Republican as Pennsylvania's 18th Congressional District.

Lamb's results came on the heels of Democratic Sen. Doug Jones' shocking win in Alabama and big wins for the party in New Jersey and Virginia late last year. As of 12:30 a.m. on the East Coast, Lamb led Saccone by a slim margin of just more than 500 votes with only some absentee ballots outstanding. Lamb declared victory, and Democratic campaign groups followed suit.

Needing a huge boost from those ballots to leapfrog Lamb, Saccone told supporters he was going to "fight" until the very end. But many Democrats already proclaimed Lamb the victor.

The votes should be recounted and all voters double checked

The Republican was out-spent 5 to 1. Need to address fundraising and at least try to stay on par.

As long as the evil donkeys run as they have announced on raising taxes, illegals before Americans and impeaching Trump Republicans have little to worry about. BTW in a special for Tennessee State Senate the Republican smashed the donkey.

Tired of all the:
1. This is a vote against Trump and everything he is doing.
2. This is a sign of a blue wave coming in November.

Fact of the matter is, IMHO, the GOPe needs to stop with the typical tactics (the whole dynamic down in Alabama) and understand that Trumps platform resonated with the voters. Maybe Lamb is conservative, but I'm guessing it's the Democrats back to their pre 2006 tactic of "lie about what you stand for until we get in the majority, then we'll stick it to the deplorables."

Uber RINOs on FOX dissing the candidate yesterday. Neocon types.

The GOPe wants Trump impeached. They are globalists.

GOP Inc ran a GOP Inc candidate and lost. Big shock.

It’s amazing he got as close as he did.

Why would Republicans panic, when the Democratic candidate ran as a Conservative Dem and said he would vote with Trump? If anything, the Dems should worry that their candidates can’t run on their party platform.

I have long held the opinion that the GOP Establishment is happiest when they are in the Minority.

You nailed it. They still get their paycheck and perks just the same as the minority party, and they can skate on the incessant excuse that they have no power to legislate.

Also, they can cater to real conservatives by pretending to push conservative values that they really don't have a heart for because they know these policies will never pass under democrat rule.

Most of the people in this area are just like him. Trump gave them tax cuts, steel and coal jobs and then they voted against his man!

"...the RNC threw this race..."

Excellent points you have made, Howie66.
When we have the POTUS, Senate, and House of Representatives...we naturally expect them to make progress.

I would not use the words “cleaned-up” when referring to Democrats. The dirty work is all covered up when they win.

That race is still up for grabs——Conor is ahead by a very slim number-——and they havent even counted the absentee and military votes.

Remember-—if Conor actually wins, we’ve lost only one US congressional seat so far (this one), and one US Senate seat. The rest of the Democrat wins are state houses ..... assembly seats. There are some 5,411 state representatives. Losing 40 of those over 5,000 seats to Democrats is hardly earth shattering. The magic Halfrican, Obama, managed to lose over 1000 of those seats in 8 years, about over 110 seats lost per year. (hat tip SmokingJoe)

In all, Obama’s tenure caused major damage to Democrats all over the nation and in the Congress where he reduced them to a minority.

The Dems cared. The GOPe didn’t. Need to address that basic issue before anything else.

So did the people who voted for Reagan, and voted for Rats in Congress vote against Reagan?

Reagan won 49 states in 1984, and yet the Rats still held Congress.
