WH Unveils Proposals To 'Harden' Schools In Wake Of Fla. Shooting
The Hill ^ | 03/11/17 | Brett Samuels

Posted on 03/12/2018 3:28:36 AM PDT by Enlightened1

The Trump administration on Sunday unveiled a series of proposals on school safety and gun restrictions in the wake of the recent shooting in Florida, including a push for states to provide firearms training for school staff members.

White House officials said the administration will establish a federal commission to assess how to best address gun violence in schools, though it will not propose any legislation of its own. The administration will also not push for universal background checks or an increase in the age requirement to purchase a rifle.

Instead, as part of an effort to "harden" American schools, officials said the administration will provide assistance to states to arm teachers, encourage them to pass laws keeping guns away from dangerous individuals and call on Congress to pass legislation strengthening the national background check system.

The Department of Justice will use existing programs to help schools partner with state and local law enforcement to provide “rigorous firearm training to qualified personnel" on a voluntary basis, after President Trump has repeatedly voiced support for arming teachers, officials said. The president has argued against "gun-free zones," saying they attract shooters.

The White House said it will also support the transition of law enforcement and ex-military personnel into education careers.

Additionally, the administration is calling on states to adopt extreme risk protection orders, which would allow law enforcement to obtain a court order and temporarily take firearms away from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others.

Yes!!! This is a much better solution! Although there is mention of young kids of long term use of psychotropics which is the common denominator in all the mass school shootings?

I do like the part about arming and training teachers. That's how you convert Liberals by the way. Take them to the firing range, and let them shoot.

This is a much better solution than what the weak Governor of Florida caving in to a few High School students.

If Rick Scott cannot stand up to a few high school students, then how do you expect him up for conservative ideas?

So which is true? That Trump passed some executive order over the weekend that got some angry on this board or that he made no changes? I noticed on that weekend thread that some never Trumpers were out in force saying how they wouldn’t vote for him again.

Yep probably paid Trolls. Just like before the Primaries and the election.

I noticed they are all over the Qanon threads too.

From my experience teaching, it seemed that the people who were most aware of the goings on with students were the custodians. They're also the people who know the school environment throughout the day. They can get in and out of anyplace in the school. They would not be responsible for calming a classroom full of students in a real situation. (been there, done that). Why not train janitors to respond to situations? That would include making expertise in firearms use a factor in hiring.

Just by outlier AM idea.

That’s because they have an 8 year old political mindset.

So like an 8 year old child they scream, they cry it’s the end of the world and throw tantrums. They are use to their echo chambers, safe spaces, etc...

True :) I was only 12 when Reagan was elected so I don’t know if the vile hatred was as bad for him. But not by supposed to conservatives.

I would like to see it like the U.S. Marshals on an Airplane.

No one knows who is armed, and you can even make the guns be biometric so only the teacher, principal and/or Administrators can use it.

I’m not really sure about custodians, but I am sure they can certainly play a role. When I was in school we never talked to them.

I could see even a year-and-a-half ago. No two years ago. Heck I met him twice at Rockefeller Plaza, shook his hand and said hello LOL. And I liked him. Then I didn’t like him. Then I liked him LOL. Then I didn’t. Then he just kept saying and doing so much that I ended up liking him and now I love him. You can’t keep your mind set on hate or nothing will ever change your mind about someone.

This is a much better solution!

This part of it is not, however:

calling on states to adopt extreme risk protection orders, which would allow law enforcement to obtain a court order and temporarily take firearms away from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others.

This is ripe for abuse after lying and judge shopping.
We all know there is no "temporary" taking, and who is going to do the "deeming"? Hmmmm?

Oh you met President Trump? Pretty cool! I would love to meet him now and just thank him. I think he has strong chance of going down as the best President ever. Time will tell...

11 years ago I watched his show on TV once or twice. I knew who he was but never really impressed. I was just neutral with him.

Today it’s far different. I love him and will back him 100%. He’s standing up for us and will not even take a paycheck for it. I love how he says in American we worship God and not government. Yes he is not perfect, but who is in life? I’m thankful he is there, and always pray for his safety.

Can you imagine where we would be if Hillary had won?

“Dangerous” individuals, eh?

No you can't. It has been tried, but has never been successful.

And, you do not need some rinky-dink add-on which makes the gun harder to use in an already stressful situation.

The way to deal with that situation is to make it a felony, with no age restrictions, which can not be plea bargained down to take a teacher's or staff members gun. Lifetime firearms prohibition. Every year announce on opening day that some staff have firearms, we will not say who, but explain the law.

Good point and here was the issue.

The Shooter was well known to be bragging that he would do it.

There are people that say if someone makes threats, then that is not arrest able. That’s what the FBI and local police are claiming.

I though that was arrest able, but perhaps it is not. For instance, look at the people that threaten our President, but they are not sent to jail. The FBI and police say they can do this and it’s protected under free speech?

I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I think that is what President Trump is trying to get at.

I agree with you it could be abused down the road.

Yes we can do that, and it’s already being used and sold.

We even see the technology on smart phones.

“The way to deal with that situation is to make it a felony, with no age restrictions, which can not be plea bargained down to take a teacher’s or staff members gun.”

No that will not work.... Criminals do not obey laws. That’s why they are criminals!

Get rid of gun free zones and approve national reciprocity. Let parents with CCW carry them at school and school events. We are first line of defense for our kids; can’t trust or rely on police to respond in a timely manner or effective.

The problem isn't guns or unprotected buildings.

The problem is crazy and evil people and liberal "feel good" politically correct racist policies and laws.

Once the schools are protected by armed security and locked down like fortresses what will wannbe killers do if they want an easy mass target?

They just have to follow one of the many school buses packed with students.

So where does it end?

Instead of dealing with the real problem will politicians outlaw our guns and have us cowering in buildings as if they were bunkers?

Will school buses have to be replaced by armored personnel carriers?

The politicians "Feel Good" lax law enforcement worked about as well in Florida as their "no guns" policy works in places like Chicago.

There would be no school massacres if everyone home schooled.

I think you can be arrested for making threats if you’re capable of carrying it out.
