Natan Scharansky had a nice detailed explanation of how authoritarians, in his case the USSR, hated jokes at their expense. He went into detail about how ridicule of them was harshly punished because they know what a potent weapon it is.
It’s sweet to hear this man squealing in rage that Trump makes people laugh at them. It enrages them, and there is no effective defense.

I laugh at any joke that’s funny. And I don’t need CNN telling me what is funny and what is not funny. That’s exactly what they’re doing they’re telling you and me what is funny and appropriate to laugh at. That’s like a tyrannical mom, or something... gosh darn it!
2 hours later in the emergency room the doctor finally got a hold of little string attached to the beads and pulled them out very slowly... Now that’s a funny joke, crude but funny.

CNN wants any one who laughs at them given the death penalty. After all, if you’re not serious, you’re colluding with Trump’s ridicule of the media.
And they can’t stand being made fun of.
Or said another way, we laugh at Trump's jokes just to make them look ridiculous. And a person in their position can't afford to be made to look ridiculous.
