Breaking: DOJ Reclassifies Bump Fire Stocks as Machine Guns
The Truth About Guns ^ | 03/10/18 | Dan Zimmerman

Posted on 03/10/2018 12:47:25 PM PST by Simon Green

In the post-Parkland hysteria, President Trump directed the Department of Justice to perform some regulatory legerdemain where bump fire stocks are concerned. The ATF had long ago passed on the stocks, deeming them perfectly legal accessories for semi-automatic rifles. Now, in a Saturday morning move apparently meant to fly under the radar . . .

The U.S. Department of Justice formally submitted a regulation on Saturday to ban “bump stocks,” a modification to high-capacity rifles that lets them fire like an automatic weapon.

President Donald Trump signed a memorandum in February directing the department to make the regulatory change, which must now be approved by the Office of Management and Budget before it is published and subject to a commentary period.

Nothing to worry about though…that will never get through Congress! Au contraire, mon frere.

The move does not require congressional approval, allowing the administration to side-step what could have been insurmountable pressure from pro-gun groups such as the National Rifle Association that have worked to erode changes in firearm laws in the wake of mass shootings in Florida and Nevada.

It’s no biggie, though. Really, now many people own, or even want a bump fire stock? This won’t affect me!

Think again. If the DOJ can use regulatory fiat to bring their ban hammer down on bump fire stocks, magically deeming them machine guns, what’s to stop this or, more likely, some future administration from deciding that “high-capacity” 30-round magazines are also unacceptable modifications that facilitate “unnecessary” rates of fire? Or lighter, drop-in triggers? Anything that could plausibly be argued to increase a gun’s “standard” rate of fire.

The NRA was on board with regulating bump fire stocks in theory, but hadn’t signed on to this particular move. This sets a terrible regulatory precedent that will almost surely be expanded and abused again down the road. Will the NRA sue? Will SAF or the GOA?

We haven’t been able to get our mitts on the new DOJ regulatory language yet, but will publish it when it’s available. Stay tuned.

You can fire a semi-automatic in ‘full auto’ with your belt loop. This is a big nothing.

First you said you watched a video that concludes an AR with a bump stock is a machine gun which is not true legally or mechanically. You apparently have no idea what defines a machine gun but let’s just say for argument a bump stock is a machine gun. Then so what? The 2nd amendment specifically protects our right to keep and bear machine guns so what is your problem? Why do dozens of federal agencies ninety percent that have nothing to do with law enforcement all possess machine guns? Nearly all local police departments have machine guns, and for what purpose? You seem to have a problem with the American People being armed as our founders intended.

This is a big nothing,

Unless one is convicted of a felony for owning a piece of plastic. Then it's rather more than "nothing ".

“I disagree. Check this out:”

Yup...but i’m guessing the dude went through a garage full of shells getting it down.

The girl in the bump stock video had it all down pat by her second clip ...well all except for hitting the target:)

A rifle with a bump stock is a machine gun. The machinery is crude but it fires as long as the trigger is pulled. The weapon is therefore automatic.

The legality you reference is of course obsolete

It is my understanding that there should be a very high tax and license required for bump stock and all other such crude conversions

They’ll need to ban belt loops too.

And rubberbands. Bellyfat, loose index fingers, shoulders and more too.

Just think. The DOJ could reclassify a water squirt gun, and suddenly call it a machine gun. That sounds ridiculous of course, but the point is that legally they could do it. The same goes for all the other regulated things in this country. They can add anything to a list anytime they want. Bypass congress. Bypass the people.

Nope..I’m all in on the 2nd Amendment and stop throwing BS around about someone you don’t even know. All I said is the bump stock makes an AR15 an automatic; maybe not by your technical definition, but in reality it does.

And I have no idea who you are arguing with, but I just want to know, Rambo...do you practice it in the mirror...you know “You talkin to me” style:)

A rifle with a bump stock is a machine gun. The machinery is crude but it fires as long as the trigger is pulled.

Completely inaccurate commentary.

The trigger is pulled once per shot.

You are too ignorant on this subject to be posting.

The NRA position that even regulating the box that ammo came in needed to be opposed.

Aside from what they claim in their fliers begging for more money, when was that?

When they helped get machineguns banned? Or maybe when they were advocating for the NICS, so that we can have big nanny government check to see if people are allowed to exercise their Constitutional rights? Or maybe when they were advocating for waiting periods? Or maybe when they were supporting interstate commerce clause to regulate ammunition?

By the way...If we had to rely on you and your “argument” on the bump stock to defend the 2nd Amendment, we would be screwed.

I was an 0331 machinegunner in the Marines - and have four combat deployments.

That is NOT a machinegun, and you don't know what you are talking about.

The problem is, if they catch you with one, you’re now in for a world of hurt. I’ve got no use for a bump stock since I’m in the city—couldn’t use it at the range, wouldn’t use it for home defense. If I was in the country, it’d be kind of fun. But, not worth the risk now.

“That is NOT a machinegun, and you don’t know what you are talking about.”

It IS a functioning automatic weapon ... come on now, admit it ...and just because it doesn’t fit your definition of a machine gun, try telling that to anyone who watches an AR15 with a bump stock in action. Again, if we are going to rely on logic like yours to defend the 2nd amendment, we are screwed.

"All I said is the bump stock makes an AR15 an automatic; maybe not by your technical definition, but in reality it does."

It's not my definition. It's the letter of the law and no a bump stock is not a machine gun. This is why the BATFE ,correctly for once, determined bump stocks do not convert semi auto firearms to machine guns.

I remember now I called you out for posting multiple threads on "red flag" laws. Something only a left wing loon could support. You were trolling that nonsense before and now you are posting nonsensical stuff about machine guns and the 2nd amendment.

Since you don't have and answer to my questions other than claiming I'm Rambo or other troll type crap I will stop replying.

“threads on “red flag” laws”

I don’t even know what a Red Flag law is:) And I’ve got all the answers I need. I really don’t see how President Trump or Gov. Scott could defend bump stocks. They would make fools out of themselves. And your relying on technicalities instead of the real world. Good luck with that!

I’d get a good kick out of watching you try to defend the bump stock in front a 1,000 Americans on national tv with your kind of logic.
