Thousands of women in Bangladesh will receive financing to develop livelihoods that can withstand the effects of climate change in one of the world's hardest-hit countries, the United Nations said.
Women and girls in the disaster-prone coastal districts of Satkhira and Khulna will receive assistance from US$33 million (S$44 million) provided by the UN's Green Climate Fund and Bangladesh's Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs.
"The rising sea level is a major threat to these areas," Mamunur Rashid, a climate change specialist at the UN Development Programme (UNDP), said from Dhaka.
"Women are disproportionately affected by the impacts," Saleemul Huq, director of the Dhaka-based International Centre for Climate Change and Development, said in a statement.
For example, officials said that women and girls are often tasked with collecting fresh drinking water, producing foods and tending to the household's animals.
"As household managers, women are primarily responsible for producing food for the family, as well as securing household water and energy," Huq said.
About 39,000 women and girls will directly benefit from the six-year project, which will be implemented starting in July, according to UNDP.

7. Define/explain past glaciation and subsequent warming without any input from humans.
This is an overt example of taking money from producers and giving it to non-producers, using the excuse of climate change. The UN, the EU and all other supra-national bodies exist in order to take money from Whitey and give it to non-Whitey.

The irony.
These persons are facing a much larger threat from global cooling, i.e. ice age than any threat from warming.
Warming tends to promote plentiful worldwide food supply. With cooling, the opposite plus accompanying social disruption.
We are all at risk. Ice age is the normal mode for the planet and the sun is cooling. Watts per square meter have been going down slightly, but consistently for years. It does not take much to trigger uncontrolled glaciation.
And there you have it- the Climate Change scam is all about creating slush funds.
Teach the women to fish and they will not go hungry.
Mother to daughter advice: Cook a man a fish and you feed him for a day. But teach a man to fish and you get rid of him for the whole weekend.
The Creator imbued even the lowest animals with the sense to seek higher ground when water levels rise.
