President Trump to Review Ban on Military Personnel Carrying Firearms

One of the Second Amendment themes Candidate Donald Trump campaigned on was that military personnel should not be made into disarmed and helpless victims.

President Trump said on Friday, 23 February,  he would be reviewing the current policies about military personnel carrying personal defensive firearms. From military.com:

President Donald Trump said Friday that he would review policies that keep troops from carrying personal weapons onto military bases.

“If we can't have our military holding guns, it's pretty bad,” Trump said in a wide-ranging speech to the annual Conservative Political Action Committee conference in Maryland, “and I'm going to look at that whole policy on military bases.”

“So we want to protect our military. We want to make our military stronger and better than it's ever been,” Trump continued in the speech, in which he also renewed his call for allowing trained teachers and military retirees to carry concealed weapons in schools.

When I joined the U.S. Army on active service, I had been competing in university pistol competitions for four years.  I knew more about pistol shooting and the civilian use of deadly force than my non-commissioned officer instructors. But, as a commissioned officer, I was not allowed to carry a personal firearm for self-defense… unless I was acting, as an additional duty, as a military game warden.

It struck me as a ludicrous example of hypocrisy and a direct contradiction of my sworn oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States, that I, as a trained military officer,

“No, he should let his subordinates/commanders deal with this...................”

Oh, those “subordinates” advocating transgenders, homosexuals, sex changes, and other social warrior issues!? I think he’s doing just fine advocating for the real military.

What does it say about America when those who are trained in the use of firearms to defend the nation are deemed incompetent to carry firearms...?

It says the political class, who control the military, have followed the practice of most governments on the planet.

There are only a very few that differ on this.

The Second Amendment is a major reason for the unique position of the United States.

So... the military should follow the practice of ‘other nations on the planet’ or follow the constitution?

Not sure that you’re saying.

When I was in the service we had to qualify with common US, Soviet and Chicom military small arms and that included hitting the target while shooting with each weapon.

If memory serves me, that was about 80 to 100 different weapons (both rifles and handguns).

The one that gave guys the most problems was the B-40 RPG launcher. There was a gas port that steadied the weapon during firing and the gas port exhausted on the right side. If you were a lefty and you didn’t put it on your right shoulder, you’d burn the side of your face when you pulled the trigger.

It gives commanders broad authority to limit this for their installations The Joint Base San Antonio Commander has shut down any non-duty carry of any weapons

At a time when any commanding officer can be removed, if anyone under his command has an "incident" involving a gun and the CO had authorized carrying firearms, then there may be some reluctance on the part of CO's to authorize carry.

This would change instantaneously if, at the next instance of a terror incident on a base where carry is not authorized, Trump chose to cashier the commander for placing his men at risk.

I agree. It was so strangle coming from duty and handing in to the Arms room magnificent firepower and feeling totally naked off duty with no right to protection let alone the 2A. We always just accepted policy. The policy is asinine.

Should be just the opposite. MANDATORY open carry at all times especially off base or off ship for every active duty with special legal protections if used to suppress a crime. Highly encouraged for all retired and vets with free range time and training, nation-wide.

As we have witnessed in eye opening accounts. What eventually happened to that marksman? Only fact remembered was the incident happened during BO’Bs Administration and, IIRC, he murdered a pregnant woman and her baby. Location and how many died have long slipped memory.

That's the way to do it, Donald!!! Excellent plan! We need more FREEDOM, not more government interference in our lives.

I am saying that the political elite in power want the commoners unarmed. They particularly want to keep their military under control.

Showing soldiers and officers that their oath of office includes the Second Amendment would be a great way to reinforce Constitutional protections and their oath of office.

Just speaking for my time in the USAF, only the SPs carried on base. A lot of drinking went on, also. Privately owned arms were supposed to be checked into the armory, though a guy pawned me a rifle several times and it was in my locker.

I remember mail ordering a pistol from Clines in Chicago, that I kept in my locker. Don't remember ever thinking about storing it at supply.

On another note one of my buddies drew a prisoner escort detail and withdrew a 45 from the supply Sgt, came to the barracks messed around and shot another kid through a wall. I don't know how the Captain kept him out of trouble but he did. Maybe because it was only a leg wound, 1958 was a different time for sure.

Got several killed at a recruitment center in Arkansas a few years back when a self proclaimed Jihadi went on a killing spree there.

Kind of. Everyone is assigned their weapons at a new unit, but they’re not issued/drawn unless you’re cleaning, training, at the range, etc. Ammo isn’t drawn unless on guard duty or range time. The only time you have your weapon on you 24/7 is basic or deployment usually.

Every time I go on base I ask the guards if there’s any news about being able to carry on base...it’s one of the few places I actually disarm for these days.

thanks. I’m a little hazy on remembering how we stored them. We were always cleaning them so they had to be at arms length.
