President Trump launched into a freewheeling, televised strategy session with lawmakers over the issue of guns by declaring that he will unilaterally bar so-called bump stocks and asking Congress to send him one terrific bill aimed at reducing gun violence.
Im going to write that out, Trump said of bump stocks devices that allow semiautomatic weapons to fire like fully automatic weapons while speaking to lawmakers gathered at the White House for a much-touted summit on gun safety. Saying he can bar bump stocks with an executive order, Trump added: You wont have to worry about bump stocks.
Trump also pressed lawmakers to send him one terrific bill combining several proposals aimed at reducing gun violence, although that could complicate the legislative outlook for such a contentious issue. Congress is already struggling to clear a relatively noncontroversial measure meant to simply improve the reporting of key information to a federal background-checks database.
It would be so beautiful to have one bill, Trump told lawmakers at the White House.
The session came weeks after a deadly high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 dead and spurred fresh calls for action to tighten gun restrictions.
Trump also repeatedly clashed with Republican lawmakers during the summit as he appeared more sympathetic to Democratic proposals. In one exchange, Trump chastised Sen. Patrick J. Toomey (R-Pa.) for resisting a move that would raise the minimum purchase age for rifles to 21.
When told that a higher age limit wasnt included in a universal background checks bill written by Toomey and Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), Trump told Toomey: You know why? Because youre afraid of the NRA.

Good grief...
I was not happy with that or what qualifies as mental health. He’s talking about taking guns away from those with mental health problems possibly without legal process. We need to define it as mental health that is dangerous. How is mentally ill defined? Joy Behar says Mike Pence is mentally ill. See how that works?
Finally, telling that guy that he was afraid of the NRA actually made me angry because he used a Democrat talking point on a fellow Republican.
I’d add I don’t even care about the bump stocks - it’s other things that bothered me.
Concealed Carry Reciprocity is essential while we still control the Congress....because if Trump sides with the dims on this issue we will not control the Congress after November.
If you’ve got di-fi laughing...it’s not a good sign.
Trump CANNOT ban Bumpfire stocks by Executive Order. But he CAN freak people out, into rushing out to buy them, and driving their prices HIGHER!
If he signs an EO banning anything firearm related Im done.
Trump is saying outrageous things about the Bill of Rights.
He can’t do it by EX order.Congress has to do it!
Why wouldn't she laugh, given that President Trump is about to enact more gun control than Obama could in his 8 years in office?
Well, he can issue the executive order and like so many of Obama's EO's, its legality will be suspect. But he can do it.
Since one effing judge took the “dreamers” issue off the table, whenever I hear news like this, I’m hopeful it means Trump decided to use his rope-a-dope strategy with Democrats on the gun rights issue.
Otherwise, I’d be angry.
Welcome to free Republic
If Trump treads on the toes of the millions of firearm owners who elected him he is toast in 2020.This will be the first big step toward a bloody civil war when the Dems try to do something really stupid

He can issue the order, but everyone will be free to IGNORE it. His “Executive Orders” only bind Federal employees.
