HondaJet overtakes Cessna as top-selling small business jet in 2017

TOKYO -- Honda Motor delivered 43 of its business jets, the HondaJet, to customers in 2017, up 20 from a year before, becoming the top-selling model for the first time by beating out U.S. rival Cessna Aircraft.

Cessna delivered 39 of its mainstay Citation M2 jets during the year.

Honda said its aircraft business improved mainly due to the strong North American market and Europe. It said about half of the aircraft it delivered went to individuals, and half to corporate clients.

The HondaJet is priced at $4.9 million. That would put annual sales at about $210.7 million, based on simple calculations.

Despite an overall slowdown in the business jet market around the world, demand for "very light" business jets such as the HondaJet grew by 50% last year from the year before.

According to data released Wednesday by the Washington-based General Aviation Manufacturers Association, a total of 676 business jets were delivered in 2017, up 1.3% from a year before, the first rise in three years. It was just half the figure for the peak year of 2008, however.

Oh that’s where I left my NSX. Next to the jet.

I always forget.

I liked this jet the first time I saw it.

I guess this plane compete with the straight-wing Citations. This plane looks more like a Citation One, which is the smallest of the “slow-tations.” Their TAS at cruise is about 440 mph, but they can go into a lot of airports with short runways. Cessna also makes the Citation X, which is a completely different aircraft, much larger, with swept wings. It has a cruise TAS of Mach .92 ( about 625mph at 32,000 ft.) My wife’s family’s business has a One, two 3’s and an X.

Best buy out there IMO is a used Cessna Citation 2.

Buying one with a lot of hours on the engines is a good way to go and then have them rebuilt... So you KNOW they are in good shape.

Saw one the other day on Trade-A-Plane for 175,000. Total airframe hours 9,017 that means the 10,000 hr inspection is not far away.

Lots of time on the engines, will soon need major overhaul...that is PRICEY. But you end up with basically new engines and a modestly fast business jet.. 75% Cruise: 464 mph. Range: 2,300 mi | 1,998 nmi and operates from a medium length strip.

After the major upcoming expenses probably still less than 1,500,000 in a very nice jet.

I'd rather have this than a 5,000,000 Honda jet....use the $ difference on upkeep/fuel.

Nice looking old planes too.

The Citation X is a really hot plane... but if I was going over 20,000,000 I’d go a little more and get a used Dassault Falcon 7, has that nice 3rd engine and 6500 mile range.

559 mph cruise, about 5,000 gallons of fuel to fill it up.

Imagine paying over 20 grand to fill up your plane.

We had a 2 then a 4 and now we have a Sovereign. We could land on some really short runways with the 2. Used to fly into Gimli, Manitoba onour Canadian fishing trips and our pilots didn’t like that runway.

All well and good, if you don’t mind getting mistaken for a certain 3-letter agency. Wish I had the $$$$

Honda engineers were pretty smart placing engines high so as to allow grass take offs and landings without sucking debris in to them.

Still, to me the MU-2 is just about the most bad ass plane the Japanese ever produced as a GA platform. The short field and rate of climb is phenomenal. Gotta stay on top and out front of it by a long way, but one very nice plane.

Fischer Price of jets (Cessna) is just that.

If you like project planes, take on a cheap Honza-Jet! I couldn’t resist. First time I saw one it was around 2:00am as it pulled up next to me. WTF is that I asked?

If I was going to go back to a turboprop I’d go back to our old King Air 350.

King Air is a much easier plane to fly. Sits big and tall too except for the 90.

The Gimli glider story probably made him superstitious.

When I was posted in Winnipeg, we used to go up there a lot.

We’d drive though heh.

...

And very affordable for a twin turboprop. I wonder if that’s because of its reputation for being a widow maker.
