A man shot a gun into a crowd outside a bar in the early morning hours of Monday, seriously injuring a woman.
Police on bar patrol heard the gunshots as bars were letting out around 2 a.m. Witnesses saw the man, who police later identified as Rashad Nashid, 37, fire two shots into a crowd in front of Nectars, according to a news release from the Burlington Police Department.
The 26-year-old victim is expected to survive, police said. A single bullet passed through her body and lodged in her clothing. Police say she has no known ties to Nashid.
A passerby pointed out Nashid to a Burlington Police officer on South Winooski Street, where they confronted Nashid and arrested him. Police found Nashid with a Ruger .380 pistol.
Police are still looking for a motive. Nashid is a convicted felon, they said, and is not allowed to carry a gun. He is also awaiting trial for a 2017 felony charge of narcotics possession.
Nashid is now in the custody of the U.S. Marshals, and will be charged in federal court for the possession of a firearm. Prosecutors will contemplate further charges as well.
Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger released a statement Monday saying he was deeply troubled by the shooting, which he said highlighted the need for stricter gun regulations.
This mornings event is a reminder of the importance of Burlingtons own efforts to protect its residents from gun violence, he said in the statement.
Several years ago, Burlington voters voted overwhelmingly in support of a charter change that would prohibit guns in bars, a commonsense measure that has languished in Montpelier ever since, despite repeated advocacy for it from Burlingtons elected representatives in the City and in the Legislature, the mayor added.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call Detective Michael Beliveau at (802) 540-2329.
Maybe they could make it illegal for a felon to have a gun.
Nashid has it made in the shade! A lot of my ass wipe relatives live in Burlington. Theyll keep him fed with plenty of bean sprouts and couscous. Find him a nice bed and take him in as one of their own.
Rashad Nashid
That’s an old New England family name, right?
I think the Nashids came over on the Mayflower...
If only our lawmakers had the courage to pass such a law...
;-)
Amazing that the cops in a sanctuary city like Burlington had the temerity to even question , much less arrest an alien.
maybe they should make it a crime to shoot somebody....
-—Nashid is a convicted felon, they said, and is not allowed to carry a gun.-—
Doesn’t he know he’s breaking the law...?
Maybe some of those tide pod eating teenagers should tell him...
After all they are so smart
..
Another pigdog murder-muzzie.
All muzzies out of the US now.
After a lifetime of being arrested for assault, drug sales, kidnapping, possession of a handgun while a felon, resisting arrest, probation violations, robbery etc. — he was obviously just starting to turn his life around.
Surprised he’s not running for mayor of Burlington, like the other convicted felon ‘Infinite Culcleasure’.
All these years of Vermont having among the most casual of firearms laws and being also one of the least violent places in the United States and this habitually bad person commits this act that certainly is not in the character of that state and it’s people and the mayor is out there demanding more gun control. What kind of a dreamworld do ones like this mayor live in?
Those rascally Amish!
Dear Mayor: ‘More gun laws will not do anything, if a criminal want a gun and use it. I was at a gun show, where 500,000 people showed up, and guess what, it was safer than the gun free city of Chicago. Not one gun at the show killed anyone. Thank you, ConservaTeen’
But, but, but you don’t understand. The mayor needs reelecting and Nashid was the perfect target for the ever popular gun control argument. Dang. Just think Nashid could have shot a whole lot more of the gawkers. And no one had a concealed weapon. I know there are a lot of drinkers in Vermont but at least one should have had a gun...now Nashid will be let loose again to shoot again.
I'm sure his American heritage dates back to the colonial era. I doubt however he's ever seen the inside of a mosque.
What gun show did you attend where 500,000 people showed up?
NaShid??!!
I'd never heard that, before.
😉
Some of us downstaters really don’t think of Burlington as Vermont, more like West NYC.
I spent some time in Burlington back in 1993. I passed by a car with its windows down and a checkbook sitting in the dashboard. Came back out of the grocery store and the check book was still sitting there. I asked a local whether there was much crime in the area and he said that when school lets out sometimes the teens get into some mischief. That was in 1993.
And motivate more bar shootings, because no one can shoot back!
