Analysis: Mueller is about to take a big step closer to Trump
MSN News ^ | 02/23/2018 | Philip Bump

To date, four people have pleaded guilty to charges brought against them by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and his team. Two were ancillary characters: a businessman who apparently sold bank account numbers to Russian trolls and a lawyer who’d worked with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his longtime partner Rick Gates.

Two were closer to the campaign. One is campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, whose connections to Russia-linked characters helped spur the initial investigation in July 2016 into whether President Trump’s campaign had aided Russian interference efforts. And then there’s Michael Flynn, a campaign aide who wound up as Trump’s national security adviser. Both Papadopoulos and Flynn have apparently agreed to work with Mueller’s team in its investigation, but it’s not clear how much either knew about what the campaign was doing. Flynn’s role was the same on paper as Papadopoulos’s, but he was clearly closer to Trump.

Neither, though, is known to have had intimate familiarity with what the Trump campaign effort looked like. Which makes Friday’s news of an intent by Gates — both a campaign staffer and, before that, a Manafort partner — to cooperate with Mueller potentially very significant.

“I wonder if Mueller had the job to find the murderer of Seth Rich, would he still be looking?”

Probably. Since Mueller still doesn’t know who sent the anthrax in the 2001 attacks.

FBI/Mueller declared Bruce Ivins guilty after they drove him to suicide in 2008.

The NAS review in 2011 showed that was almost certainly not the case.

The best prediction of how someone will behave in the future is what they have done in the past.

If one wants to learn about Mueller’s deficiencies as an investigator, just look at the anthrax attacks investigation.

WHERE is Sessions?? Where and who is doing the investigation into: 1) the Clinton uranium swap; 2) the Strzok/Ohr/McCabe/Brennan combine; 3) the phony investigation and clearing of Hillary and her associates on the email fraud; 4) Comey and Clapper lying to Congress; (5) McCain’s aide Kramer taking the Fifth Amendment to avoid testifying to Congress about the crap dossier’ 6) the murder of Seth Rich; 7) applying for and obtaining a FISA warrant to spy on the political opposition based on lies?? Its not Mueller, its not a local prosecutor, its not Sessions, who the hell is protecting the interests of the Republic and of the American people??

Fortunately, since Trump hasn’t committed any high crimes or misdemeanors, this will be brought to SCOTUS who will throw it out.

SCOTUS doesn't review impeachments.

Dana Perino is a GW Bush bot. Not one of them is any good. A real bunch of self-interested types, along with Bush Sr., GW and brother Jeb and McCain’s bitter ex-staffers always chosen to represent the “conservative” view on the networks and cable.

Wishful thinking, Mr. Philip Bump.

Either sh** out the evidence or get off the frakin’ pot!

“SCOTUS doesn’t review impeachments.”

I would assume that Trump’s attorneys would fight this. Who gets to define whether any high crimes or misdemeanors were committed?

Two-thirds of the Senate.

Complete garbage. These "new" charges are from things that happened FIVE YEARS AGO. I am now convinced that they are merely political indictments MEANT to give the IMPRESSION that there is something "there" when it comes to Trump and Russia collusion. ALL the news stories are slanted and massaged to put out that viewpoint. All designed to keep dragging Trump through the mud.

It's amazing to watch leftists commenting on these stories. They actually believe that these have *something* to do with Trump based strictly on how the stories are edited.

I used to think that Mueller was ultimately going after Dems but not anymore. His investigation is nothing more than another political operation.

Most notably, there's that meeting in June 2016 at Trump Tower, which included Donald Trump Jr., Kushner and Manafort.

Wasn't that the meeting that Fusion GPS set up as a sting?

"The co-founder of Fusion GPS, the firm behind the unverified Trump dossier, met with a Russian lawyer before and after a key meeting she had last year with Trump's son, Fox News has learned"

That's all they've got? One meeting set up by the company that arranged the dossier, etc, etc?

I know they desperately want to get Trump, but this is ridiculous.

I never thought Mueller was doing anything more than covering for Comey and wasting money, and I have found no reason to change that opinion.

With the new indictments the pressure on Manafort is intense to come up with some dirt on Trump. He is facing serious prison time.

It’s not difficult to see Mueller’s play here. Manafort was a participant in that Trump Tower meeting with the Russian attorney. The official line is that the e-mail correspondence concerning information from the Russian government was in fact a ruse to secure a meeting to discuss the current issues surrounding Russian adoptions. What Mueller wants is one of the meeting participants to say that the adoption claim was a lie and that the meeting was used to coordinate the Russian efforts with the Trump campaign. Trump Jr. is not an option, so Mueller has Manafort and Kushner. Kushner being family the obvious choice is Manafort. So you pile up the charges against Manafort. Now that his partner has flipped the screws are getting really tight. What happens now depends on the character of Manafort. He is facing potential decades. Many of the charges against him are also state crimes. The acceptance of a federal pardon can be used as evidence of guilt in a state court. In accepting a pardon you are admitting guilt, so it’s an effective confession to state crimes punishable by decades in prison. He only has two ways out. Win at trial or testify that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government. His chances of winning at trial just got torpedoed by Gate’s betrayal. Manafort has all the incentive in the world to say the words that Mueller has been waiting for, truth be damned. I don’t think Manafort is a man of honor and I think he will tell the lie. And a similar trap is being prepared for Kushner as well. These are dangerous times for the administration and the country.
