Dems propose ‘assault weapon’ ban, state-run gun registry for Ohio

A group of Ohio Democrats is pushing for a statewide ban on many semi-auto firearms in the Buckeye State in the wake of a mass shooting in Florida.

The proposal, SB 260, backed by state Sens. Mike Skindell and Charleta Tavares, would define an “assault weapon” as a semi-auto firearm with the capacity of accepting 10 or more rounds in the magazine, making it a felony to possess one.

“Assault weapons were designed to be used by trained members of the military to kill people,” Tavares said. “These weapons, unfortunately, are killing innocent children and adults by people who want to murder, maime [sic] and terrorize large masses of people in public spaces.”

The move, inspired by a recent shooting in Florida that claimed the lives of 17, goes past the expired federal ban in the respect that it would classify even firearms with fixed magazines, such as a .22 rifle with a tubular underbarrel magazine, as an assault weapon. Possession of a gun classified as such in Ohio would be punishable as a fifth-degree felony which allows for up to 12 months in prison and fines of as much as $2,500 for the first offense. It would also require the Ohio Attorney General’s office to create a registry of all sales of firearms and ammunition.

While Democrats hold only nine of 33 seats in the Ohio Senate, Republican Gov. John Kasich has publicly signaled support for laws that target some semi-autos such as the AR-15.

Gun rights advocates say the proposal falls flat. “It is an insane idea. It just doesn’t work and our kids deserve a solution that does work,” said Jim Irvine, president of the Buckeye Firearms Association.

I thought the shooting was in Floriduh.

I want to say to all these PC numbsculls, “Repeat after me: It is not about the gun. It is about disarming people with a gun free zone but not ensuring a bad guy with a gun doesn’t get in.”

Courthouses and airports understand this. It works.

What they are saying, effectively, is that they can’t stop a murderer, but they make it harder for mass-murder to be so quick and effective.

Reasoning seems sound, for about 5 seconds. Then you realize that laws don’t stop criminals, and that this law would be for one state, where those guns already exist, and into which more could come from other states easily, illegally.

So are you really stopping anything? Not murder? Not even mass murder for anyone with a motivation for it... which, the last two mass murder shootings showed forethought and pre-planning.

So this is all just feel good BS

Oh yes he would! He’s on his way out of politics for good when his term as governor ends, so like his “comrade in arms,” John McLame, he will try to $hit on everyone with whom he has a beef, which is pretty much everyone!

Just a reminder that their comprehension skills are ZERO. Any other event it’s the perp. Any firearm event, it’s the inanimate object. Never be able to get them to understand that.

It’s weird, isn’t it? He was in on the Class of 94 House takeover and he spoke good sense (so did Boehner, so did Scarborough); when did these former good guys flip their lids?

The fixation on the types of firearms ones like Cruz or Lanza used in their bloody rampages fails to take into consideration that police response time coupled with gun free zones means that a perpetrator can even use a single shot shotgun or rifle and achieve a death toll at least not dissimilar from what the above mentioned did with a semi auto.

In Montreal in December 1989, the city coroner made this sort of conclusion concerning Gamil Gharbi’s (aka Marc Lepine) attack at Ecole Polytechnique with a Ruger Mini 14 sporting rifle (and also a hunting knife as he stabbed at least one victim to death) as police did not enter the building until some ten minutes after Gharbi had taken his own life and thirty minutes after he began his rampage (killing 14 women students).

Goodbye virtually all semiautomatic handguns and rifles. The legislation would outlaw possession of such firearm with the capacity to accept a 10 round magazine. An extended magazine can be manufactured for any semiauto with a detachable mag....so goodbye, 1911s.

True nothing positive could come from it.

Many negatives however. I would make sure a single penny of mine never made it’s way to Ohio again.

[[Possession of a gun classified as such in Ohio would be punishable as a fifth-degree felony which allows for up to 12 months in prison and fines of as much as $2,500 for the first offense.]]

AND a lifetime ban on ever owning a gun again because you are now a felon for having a 22 semi automatic that you didn’t immediately hand over to the state when the law passed

My guess is too much time in Congress. These people were “bought over” into servitude by other people with money. So they end up being “captive” to the things the monied folks want. Which is usually at crossed purposes to what the country really needs. They are all sellouts to whatever principles they had initially.
