Turkey’s violence-tinged foreign policy

Speaking recently about his military’s ongoing invasion of the Kurdish-ruled Afrin region in northern Syria, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan taught much of the world a rather bizarre term.

“It is clear that those who say ‘we will respond aggressively if you hit us’ have never experienced an Ottoman slap.”

He was referring to Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk, commander of the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS.

The pro-government news website Hur Haber describes an “Ottoman slap” as “a type of strike used by Ottoman soldiers during unarmed defense or attack. It could be done with both sides of the hand and could muddle, strike unconscious or even kill the one on its receiving end. Only specialized persons could give this slap and it could only be learned after having undergone years-long training.”

The Ottoman slap has also come to mean a violent, national action by Turks to someone they consider their enemy. The slap is so powerful and effective it provides Turks with absolute victory and the enemy with utter defeat and shame.

The term is commonly used in Turkey.

It is becoming more clearer by the day what the "thinking" of Erdogan the Islamist actually is. He really believes he has been chosen to dictate to the world, because he is the new Ottoman ruler.

In this article Uzay has done a good job of connecting Turkey's actions in Efrin, Rojava and Cyprus. Erdogan must believe he can threaten/insult the entire world and it will not impact Turkey. Because of 70 years of NATO memebership? Headshake.

The USA’s foreign policy is pretty violence tinged as well. What with all the invasions and bombings and drone assassinations and coups against democratically elected governments and giving billions of dollars of weapons and training to al-Qaeda in Syria.

The USA does not advocate genocide.

Massacre, ethnic cleansing and Genocide are in Turkey’s past. None of it has ever been admitted.

Not since the founding of Modern Turkey after the end of WWI has an Islamist been the top leader of Turkey. Erdogan is the only one. And he openly advocates forming a Neo Ottoman Empire by conquest. Make no mistake, that is exactly why he entered Efrin. Kill and displace residents and replace them with his own. Same thing they have always done. The same strategy that Muhammad is said to have written in his Quran.

Ataturk, founded Turkey stating it would be a secular nation. It was by statement, but not by actions. But never openly Islamist.
