APD calls shooter who stopped violent attack a ‘hero’ (NM
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | February 19, 2018 | Ryan Boetel

Albuquerque police are calling the man who shot and killed another man at Yale and Gibson on Sunday evening a “hero” who may have prevented a murder.

Officer Simon Drobik, a police spokesman, said charges are not likely to be filed against the 34-year-old man, but the final decision will be up to the District Attorney’s Office.

The man, an Uber driver who has served in the National Guard for 12 years, intervened in a domestic violence altercation that led to the shooting, police said.

Drobik told reporters that Xiao Gong, who owns an Albuquerque hotel, was driving her daughter to the Albuquerque International Sunport around 5 p.m. Sunday when her estranged husband, Qian Ming, 66, intentionally crashed his car into Gong’s truck near the intersection.

After the wreck, Ming ran toward the two women and fired into the car, striking the daughter in the shoulder. He then pulled the daughter from the car and started violently pistol whipping her in the street, Drobik said.

That’s when the guardsman pointed his weapon at Ming and told him to stop. Drobik said Ming pointed the gun at the man, who feared for his safety and shot and killed Ming.

“To say the least, this guy prevented possibly a double homicide. That’s what we could have on our hands tonight,” Drobik said. “In my 19 years of experience, I would say that those two females would have been dead if he hadn’t stepped in and took action.”

Seems like Uber would have to provide the vehicles to have standing in keeping weapons out...worst they can do is ban him fro working for them and that seems like a bad business decision considering the story.

I don't think it's purely Uber's business decision, but rather may be a mandate from their liability insurance company.

Uber prohibits firearms for both driver and rider

But it wouldn’t come up unless you had to use it.

I wouldn’t drive an usher unless I was armed.

Me, neither. Also, are you posting from a (so-called) smart phone? I think the auto-Mad-Libs feature is turned on.

Two more shootings in ABQ in the last 24 hours:

APD: 1 shot and killed in Northeast Albuquerque park

BCSO: Deputies involved in shooting in South Valley

ABQ getting as bad as Chicago. It's already #1 in the US for auto theft.

“However, I don’t know whether Uber allows their drivers to have weapons in their cars.”

Uber officially does not allow drivers to be armed. However, they can not enforce this, and many drivers carry.

It has not been tested in court as to whether they have a legal right to terminate a contractor for lawfully carrying a gun in his or her own car.

Also, the article only says the hero was an Uber driver. It does not indicate if he was “ubering” when this incident happened. If he was not working for Uber at the time, Uber could not lawfully terminate him.

Not good.

Most of the car thieves probably drive straight down to Juarez.

I don’t know there were no ‘trigger’ warnings in the post or the story itself and I am feeling a bit traumatized. I think I lay down for a bit and then call a lawyer when I feel better

They crack down on the police, and put them under federal control, and surprise! Crime explodes.

They crack down on the police, and put them under federal control, and surprise! Crime explodes.

That's just one of three reasons. The other two are the large number of vacancies in the APD and the revolving door catch-and-release policy under the new state constitutional amendment that allows judges to release so-called non-dangerous criminals on their own recognizance if they plead poverty.

“Uber prohibits firearms for both driver and rider”

Oops. I’ve used Uber twice. I broke their rules both times.

Nicky Cruz took an Uber to a certain school. Broke the rules.
Just sayin’.

“Nicky Cruz took an Uber to a certain school. Broke the rules.”

Obviously, Uber needs to put this part of their policy in bolder print so that passengers can understand they are not ALLOWED to carry guns on Uber rides.

Could have prevented this whole thing.

I mean, this guy would have realized he was at risk of getting negative feedback on his Uber profile and could even get banned, forcing him to rely on Lyft in the future.

I wouldn’t have given warning. There was a mall shooting years ago near us. A shop-owner armed himself and went looking for the shooter. Saw him and yelled “stop” or whatever. Shop owner got shot (paralyzed below the waist) - but the shooter did stop after that - ran into a storeroom to hide until the cops found him.

Check around your local gun stores ...... rumor that high capacity mags were taken off the shelves after the bumpstock “and other enablers” story broke ..... was on the FNC app.

Agree, giving warning is very situation dependent.

Is there only one perp?

Are you confident of your ability to disable the target before he turns on you?

Maybe I missed it, while it stated that he is/was an Uber driver, it didn’t mention if he was working at the time.

No, you didn’t miss it. The story just said he was an Uber driver. However, given the location of the shooting (the Yale/Gibson intersection is the north entrance to the airport), it can be inferred he was driving for Uber at the time.
