Florida shooting: Should US gun raffles be cancelled?
BBC News ^ | 19th February 2018 | BBC News

Organisers of gun giveaway competitions in the US have come under pressure following the Florida school shooting that killed 17 on Wednesday.

Republican politicians in Maryland and Kansas went ahead with their gun giveaways, while a county sheriff in North Carolina cancelled his raffle.

A children's baseball team defended its decision to continue with a fundraising effort, in which the winner will receive an AR-15 assault rifle.

That type of gun was used in Florida.

Gun sweepstakes - costing as little as $5 (£3.50) per ticket - are a part of life in some parts of the US, with the National Rifle Association having held raffles for decades.

Organisers have hit back at the online criticism, saying their fundraising events were planned months ago.

Organisers have hit back at the online criticism, saying their fundraising events were planned months ago.

Mr Penman, who is running for a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates, told Fox News that his event "was months in the planning" and his event's Facebook post said the winner would have to pass a background check.

The world doesnt end because of a bad incident.

We dont surrender constitutional rights because criminals break laws.

Naturally they don’t mention that the winner has to pass the 4473 check.

We do not surrender constitutional freedoms because of hysterical emotion.

We do not govern by ever changing, fleeting emotion.

Women and stupid men acting like women may very well want to, but that is no way to live and live sanely.

The Left is treading very close to over-playing their hand.

Again.

I love it when the BBC passes judgement on the US.

Do we have to kick their ass again? I thought we got rid of the desire for their opinion 200 years ago.

The twits at BBC should worry more about the islamic murderers entering Britain. I guess they forgot the lesson of 1776 to butt out of our business. Maybe BBC needs a punch in the mouth to remember.

Florida shooting: Should US gun raffles be cancelled?

That would be up to the organization holding the raffle, though the optics of a baseball team or a politician offering an AR-15 are kind of bad at the moment.

“Naturally they don’t mention that the winner has to pass the 4473 check.”

Depends on how the giveaway group does it. I won a raffle of a S&W LE 6920 model of the AR15 from a local Chamber of Commerce. Apparently, the committee chair had directly bought the rifle from a local gun shop so he had already done the 4473 and giving it to me was a simple face-to-face transfer which does not require a background check in this state. I did provide my concealed carry license as my ID when he gave it to me so he had assurance I was an authorized person. We did it at a local gun shop because they thought there was a need for another check for the transfer but the shop straightened them out on the facts.

They could have simply bought a gift certificate for the full value of the rifle and presented that to me so I would have to proceed to the retailer to make the actual purchase with the requisite background check/4473.

I’ve won 3 guns at raffles.

Had to pass the same Federal background check for every one of them

Does anyone actually know someone who won a gun raffle?

Of course it doesn't, and you don't have to go any farther than your own garage to know this.

Last year, traffic deaths increased 6 percent, to 40,200, according to estimates released on Wednesday by the National Safety Council. The two-year increase — 14 percent — is the largest in more than a half a century. LINK

This means that roughly 110 humans or 6.5 x 17 (school shooting victims) die every day in the United States.

This year roughly 1 million (2,740 per day) innocent unborn humans will be aborted. That's roughly 161 times the number of children killed at the Florida high school.

Where's the high school skipped school days and protests over these things?

Someone needs to sit down with these little snot-nosed kids and explain the facts of life to them.

We have guns to protect ourselves, our family, our community, and our nation. The reason you still have adult supervision is because you simply don't have the tools to run anyone else life right now, let alone your own.

Get back in school you brainless morons.

I think that could be a felony. That chairman had had to say he was the actual purchaser on the 4473 when he knew it was being purchased for someone else.

No.

There could be some age restrictions on heavy-duty weapons; not sure.

But enough with the gun laws. I come from Chicago, one of the heaviest gun-regulated places in the U.S. Also, with one of the highest murder rates.

An armed society is a polite society, as they say.

My opinion is not popular here in Canada. ;)

Just read John Lott’s “More Guns, Less Crime.” He is a teacher ? at the University of Chicago, where I got an MA.

He studied all of the states, IIRC, and found that those with concealed carry laws have fewer crimes. Please correct me if I am not remembering this correctly (sorry if I’m wrong;suffered a traumatic brain injury a couple of weeks ago).
