From rival to wingman, Ted Cruz boasts of chumminess with Trump as he stumps for re-election

SUGAR LAND — One thing Sen. Ted Cruz isn’t doing as he seeks a second term is running away from the president. Despite a checkered history, the Texan boasts about his access and influence on matters ranging from taxes to the Paris Climate Accord.

“I spent a lot of time urging President Trump to pull out of that deal,” he recounted. “I spent 45 minutes on Air Force One saying, `Mr. President, this is killing jobs and it’s bad for our economy.'”

The day after Trump announced his decision, Cruz continued, “he calls me on my cellphone. He says, 'Well, Ted, I did it, what do you think?’ ... I told him, `Mr. President, everyone who hates you is ticked off and everyone who loves you is thrilled.’”

~~

Midterms almost always punish the party in power. Trump’s low ratings won’t help. Rather than distancing himself, though, Cruz is fully embracing Trump — quite a reversal for someone who this time two years ago was calling Trump a “pathological liar.”

“He’s successfully reinvented himself,” said Pablo Mastrangelo, 41, an engineering contractor from Katy who attended the dinner. “He has no choice. ... They’re not best friends, but Trump is the president. He’s a Republican. Cruz is playing that game as best he can.”

Irritating the establishment was central to Cruz’s first Senate run and 2016 White House bid. His bond with an unconventional president is central to his re-election pitch.

“He has become the confidant who gets the job done for the president of the United States,” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told activists in Sugar Land. "He is the go-to guy. He's the guy."

~~

Texas Republicans remember his resistance to explicitly endorsing Trump at the GOP convention, but few still hold it against him.

I like Cruz. I was proud to vote for Trump, and would have been equally proud to vote for Cruz had he led the ticket.

You can "imagine" whatever you want to about Cruz, but I can PROMISE you that should Democrat Beto O’Rourke beat Cruz....he WILL vote to "dump Trump" since Beto supports: gun-control, abortion, anmesty/no borders and legalizing drugs (because "too many people are being killed across the border and we can't stop it anyway").

What does Cruz say about his vote for the deficit-enlarging budget?

Which state do you live in?

We’ll send Beto O’Rourke your way.

SMH.

If the Dems take over Congress in 2018, and Speaker Pelosi moves to impeach, I think Cruz would be the second vote in the Senate to convict - right behind Romney.

This will not happen. If it did, Cruz would be primary-ed out.

Whatever you are smoking is quality stuff. How about sharing some? :) :) :) :)

I'm glad you don't live in Texas, then.

Your philosophy would have put Hillary in the White House.......and would send an "anti-Trump agenda" Democrat to Washington in Cruz's place.

No worries, I am an Anti-Choomer. I am simply pointing out a few things: We can't lose Congress. If we do, Pelosi will get out of neutral and will be fully behind impeachment. Secondarily, we already have seen enough Anti-Trumper Rs and RINOs (those who are like Flake and McCain) that many in the Senate would vote for conviction. Romney would climb on board fast.

Lots of great comments on this thread.

We need Prez Trump and Sen Cruz, working together and supporting each other.

Bygones need to be just that; the Big Picture is our very fine Country!

Under the Obama rule maybe, but not as the founders wrote the Constitution.
Those born with divided loyalties, allegiance, citizenship and nationality are precisely who the founders were excluding with the natural born citizen requirement.
Only those who are naturally Americans because they could be nothing else are eligible.

“Ted Cruz is eligible to run for President.”

Don’t confuse the mouth-breathers.

Most went the way of Russian troll farmers (who started much of the anti-Cruz stuff, a tidbit that is under reported), but some of their useful idiots have hung around.

Ted Cruz is eligible to run for President.

Where, Canada?

Oh wait, he renounced his Canadian citizenship.

What, was Cruz "born again"?

In the US, to two citizen parents? I don't think so.

Agreed, I like both, and during primaries preferred Cruz, but in hindsight have decided the voters knew better than me, as Trump was better equipped to both prevail over Hillary (none of the others could flip the midwest while holding the states won last time), and also to move forward the agenda that they both support once in office.

Russians? Go figure.....

I just thought we had a lot of liberal media trolls on here since their squalls of "lyin' Ted"..... and other various insults.... sounds just like the crap the networks are spouting about Trump, on a daily basis, in the hope that they can make people start liking Democrats more.
