From rival to wingman, Ted Cruz boasts of chumminess with Trump as he stumps for re-election

SUGAR LAND — One thing Sen. Ted Cruz isn’t doing as he seeks a second term is running away from the president. Despite a checkered history, the Texan boasts about his access and influence on matters ranging from taxes to the Paris Climate Accord.

“I spent a lot of time urging President Trump to pull out of that deal,” he recounted. “I spent 45 minutes on Air Force One saying, `Mr. President, this is killing jobs and it’s bad for our economy.'”

The day after Trump announced his decision, Cruz continued, “he calls me on my cellphone. He says, 'Well, Ted, I did it, what do you think?’ ... I told him, `Mr. President, everyone who hates you is ticked off and everyone who loves you is thrilled.’”

~~

Midterms almost always punish the party in power. Trump’s low ratings won’t help. Rather than distancing himself, though, Cruz is fully embracing Trump — quite a reversal for someone who this time two years ago was calling Trump a “pathological liar.”

“He’s successfully reinvented himself,” said Pablo Mastrangelo, 41, an engineering contractor from Katy who attended the dinner. “He has no choice. ... They’re not best friends, but Trump is the president. He’s a Republican. Cruz is playing that game as best he can.”

Irritating the establishment was central to Cruz’s first Senate run and 2016 White House bid. His bond with an unconventional president is central to his re-election pitch.

“He has become the confidant who gets the job done for the president of the United States,” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told activists in Sugar Land. "He is the go-to guy. He's the guy."

~~

Texas Republicans remember his resistance to explicitly endorsing Trump at the GOP convention, but few still hold it against him.

He could be a great Senator if he concentrated on that and forgot about running for President. He is not eligible.

“From rival to wingman...”

Well, Maverick and Iceman learned that lesson...why not, if it works??

So they aren’t best of friends. So what? Trump respects Cruz and likewise. Both are winners

Doesn't much matter to me how Cruz brands himself now, because I will prefer anything he does over the Dem who is trying to take his seat.

I live in Texas and unless there is some other stellar conservative that will run against him I will vote for Ted although Trump got my vote in the primaries 2016.

No Legislator has done as much to advance the exact same causes that Trump has advanced as has Ted Cruz. Nobody else even comes close.

Didn’t the Dallas Morning News endorse hillary in 2016? If so, consider the source.

He’s good as a Senator.

Beware though, in case he tip-toes back to #NeverTrumpLand.

I should hope so! He’s opposed Trump on a lot of things, but it has always seemed to me like a dog in the manger action. Stupid and self defeating, and perhaps he’s realized that.

Cruz should quit “kissing and telling!” Being a confidant of the President, means keeping your mouth shut!

Ted Cruz is eligible to run for President.

If the Dems take over Congress in 2018, and Speaker Pelosi moves to impeach, I think Cruz would be the second vote in the Senate to convict - right behind Romney.

No, he is not. He is Canadian born Cuba. Besides, he is a liar and is universally hated. Well, except by you apparently. Consider the incredible loss he suffered in 2016. Pathetic, embarrassing. He’s lucky if he can manage reelection to the senate. If I lived in Texas I would either vote for an opponent or skip voting.
