A North Carolina mom started serving a week-long jail sentence for having her daughter baptized, according to reports.
The 2016 baptism at St. Peters Catholic Church when the girl was 2 years old defied a judges order in a custody battle between unmarried couple, Kendra Stocks and Paul Schaaf, who are no longer together.

Bulwyf raises a good point; I think, under common law, no matter the form; you are baptized Christian, not by denomination. Some churches believe otherwise, of course.
Ironically, I too have an Episcopalian father and my mother now deceased was Catholic. My father agreed that I could be raised Catholic, and he signed the paper I mentioned. It was never an issue because my parents remained married until my mother died when I was 17, and by that point I was confirmed Catholic and still am a practicing Catholic. I would however attend my father’s church as well especially on liturgical holy days so we could be together. I love my faith and am thankful to be a member of the Catholic church,.
The woman who told you you are cursed is a mean woman who incidentally is just plain wrong, and had little understanding of her faith. The Catholic Church recognizes baptisms from other Christian denominations, and considers you to be a fellow Christian. I hope that helps a bit. These things are complicated.. God Bless You.
Two words; Sad and silly.
I predict this little child will be taught by one parent to despise or disrespect the other parent. This is how it begins. Such treatment can become a way of life. All the child ever knows. “Remind me again, why do I hate Daddy?”
She is where she belongs as this has little about religion. It is just a messy divorce and a crazy woman.
People don’t have to be baptized only once. Or sprinkled or wet with a few drops...
Have another one, perhaps wait until the child is old enough to understand the meaning. In a river by some country preacher who knows the significance too.
Thank you very much for your explanation, and for your Christian kindness.
It became an issue for my family, because my mother ‘ran around’, got into other trouble, and my father got custody of us in the divorce - which was quite unusual in the 1950s. Since he took me and my brother home for his mom to raise, he allowed her free hand; and she took us back to the Presbyterian faith of her youth.
It’s all good; we had a good upbringing and a solid background in Christianity, which I appreciate very much, even though I left organized religion later.
My best to you.
The mother went against a court order to make her ex mad. She lost.
It was my understanding he wanted to be presepresent for the child’s baptism.
Go to jail for baptizing a child. Don’t go to jail if the child is aborted. Why didn’t they just baptize the child twice with each parent having their own ceremony?
“District Court Judge Sean Smith found Stocks guilty of contempt last March, and wrote that the mother had acted in bad faith disregard when she failed to notify Schaaf of the baptism or give him any role in the ceremony, the paper reported.”

That would have been an excellent solution; but I think Mairdie is correct: it seems to have just became another spite issue in the couples’ petty, selfish arguments.
Thank you. And a good evening to you, as well.
2 parents, even though apart, agreed, then what difference did it make to the judge???””
It’s like not bowing to the king. The blackrobed bastards place themselves above all others, including the elected president of the US. In many cases, judges are the worst of the lot of shyster lawyers.
Honestly, even if the ex-husband hadn’t agreed, the right of free worship overrides the dictates of a judge. Parents sharing kids under a court order take them to different churches all the time. Would he have put her in prison had the child been prayed over, blessed, etc?
Wow. This is a pretty in your face act of defiance to a judicial order and also of calculated spite directed to the father. If I were the judge I would have to seriously consider giving sole custody of the child to the father and limiting the mother to supervised visitation. She sounds like she is several fries short of a Happy Meal.
Agreed. It’s none of the damned judge’s business.
Our system depends upon judges arbitrating disputes not issuing orders outside of the dispute before them.
That means they get to arbitrate one case with one issue that’s before them and reviewable by a hurry not issue lifelong orders not spesficly discussed in that case.
This is why the system is not working anymore. This is not the rule of law but a dictator in a black robe.
We have an injustice system not a justice system. A justice system enforces laws as written not the mirror will of men on a case-by-case basis.
Issuing an order not spesficly the subject of the outcome of a case is not a ligitmate power of a judge. That is the exclusive domain of a dictator.
Baptizing a 2-year-old child who is incapable of making such a decision—while it may be edifying for the parent—is utterly meaningless in the context of Christian salvation...
You forgot the part about the person being baptized making a conscious decision to do so. A 2-year-old child can do no such thing. I Peter 3:21...
