Federal immigration agents are escalating efforts to crack down on businesses hiring undocumented workers. New data released Friday morning shows Immigration and Customs Enforcement visited 122 businesses over the past five days, mostly in Southern California.
Mike Poindexter is CEO of his family business the Poindexter Nut Company near Fresno, California. He says most Americans don't want these labor-intensive jobs.
"We hire people all the time. They show up, they work two days and they leave," Poindexter said.
His company is now being audited by ICE.
"We've had somewhere between 5 to 10 percent of our workforce quit voluntarily just over this," he said.
Asked why he's not hiring workers legally documented to work in the U.S. Poindexter said, "because they show up with documentation Here's my green card, here's my social security card and it is illegal for me to question that."
When the company was audited 10 years ago, Poindexter says they were forced to let go of 70 percent of the workforce, costing the business about $2 million.
"They said you think it's OK to hire illegals? I said I've got a person with three American-born children, U.S. citizens and I have to fire both of their parents, both of them," he said.

“ICE immigration sweep in California puts employers and families on edge”
Good.
When you break the law and are living in the USA illegally, you should be “on edge.”
Good.
Illegal aliens should be so worried about arrest that they go home.
It is a shame that commie loving illegal loving employers like this are not penalized.
He says most Americans don’t want these labor-intensive jobs
Can’t he just move his Farm to Mexico then.
Nothing to worry about if your are not here illegally, yeah?
Just on edge?! They should be in fear. Okay, need more ICE, more and very public arrests. How about the California AG’s self-admitted illegal family?! Maybe him for conspiracy? Let’s see some real action and not crumbs.
It's illegal to use e-verify?
The business owner was busted 10 years ago and he has continued to employ illegal aliens.
That needs to be corrected.
When employers start losing their businesses instead of just money, they will stop hiring illegal aliens.
Mike Poindexter, Public Enemy. Prefers low wages and illegal workers instead of real wages and legal workers. Then, has the nerve to say no Americans will work at his low wages. Pathetic. Pay a real wage and Americans will do the work. If the pay is right, there has NEVER been a shortage of good American talent.
OK, what’s the downside?

You are underpaying them.
It isn’t they don’t want the jobs — they don’t want the jobs at the wage you are offering.

The heck with money. Time to add jail time for the second infraction. Maybe THAT will get threir attention.
As the sole provider for his family of six,
So this low wage worker is supporting his family of six on those low wages? Sure he is. Poindexter’s low wage employees are being subsidized by the US taxpayers, as usual.
Exactly. We, consumers, either pay upfront with a fair market price based on honest labor or we pay via taxes so the employer can cheat Americans and used foreign labor as part of his business profit model. I’d rather pay double for the item and know it is legal product in all ways, than save money at the register only to pay via taxes later.
1 yr in the pen for each illegal he hires will put a stop to it.
