Trump wants to slash food stamps and replace them with a ‘Blue Apron-type program’

By Caitlin Dewey February 12 at 6:57 PM

The Trump administration wants to slash food aid to low-income families and make up the difference with a box of canned goods — a change that Office of Management and budget director Mick Mulvaney described in a Monday briefing as a “Blue Apron-type program.”

“What we do is propose that for folks who are on food stamps, part — not all, part — of their benefits come in the actual sort of, and I don't want to steal somebody's copyright, but a Blue Apron-type program where you actually receive the food instead of receive the cash,” Mulvaney said. “It lowers the cost to us because we can buy [at wholesale prices] whereas they have to buy it at retail. It also makes sure they're getting nutritious food. So we're pretty excited about that.”

Mulvaney's remarks drew raised eyebrows from some critics, who accuse the Trump administration official of drawing an unfair comparison between the food stamp program, which delivers an average of $1.37 per meal to America's poorest, and a high-end meal kit that runs $10 per serving.

The Liberals will be outraged and decry this plan, as taking food out of the mouths of babies.

Why is the Post and Left angry about this? These leeches should be buying nutritious, whole foods that they should be cooked from scratch. Isn’t that the goal and what Michelle has always been saying?

Blue Apron? What’s wrong with kit meals? The government can buy food in bulk cheaper than people can buy in the store.

Not exactly gouging the poor.

Whatever commodities are doled out to the poor, it can still be converted to cash. Folks on the nearby rez do it all the time. They sell it for pennies on the dollar to buy booze.

Trump is heartless in this effort trying to keep disadvantaged people from special dietary requirements available with the current food stamp program:

Trump proposes restricting choices for food stamp recipients

http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/373507-trump-proposes-restricting-choices-for-food-stamp-recipients

“With an annual cost of $70.9 billion, SNAP makes up about 80 percent of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) budget. About 44 million people get benefits from the program each month. As part of the farm bill — which is being rewritten this year — changes to SNAP need to go through the House and Senate agriculture committees.

Last year, Congress largely ignored the administration’s proposal to cut the program by a quarter. “

I have said for years that food stamps should only be valid for 4 or 5 aisles in the grocery store.
1. Fresh fruit and Vegetables.
2. Fresh meat (Except deli)
3. Dairy (Except deli and frozen)
4. Cleaning supplied (Laundry soap as such)
5. Personal hygiene. (Shampoo, toothpaste soap)

No bread, crackers, alcohol, frozen goods, no canned goods. There would be some “Junk Food” type items available such as hotdogs etc. But it would cut out a lot of the bad diet choices that the so-called poor make. If they want a loaf of bread, get a job and buy one. If you want noodles or rice then pay for them. If they want starch with a meal then buy potatoes.

This would cut out most of the abuse. It would also mean that many of the so-called poor would have to learn how to cook rather than microwaving. Cooking is a marketable skill.

I am not a nutrition NAZI and eat plenty of junk but I pay for it from my own pocket. If I am paying, through taxes to feed your kids then I want them to eat real food not microwaves pizza rolls.

When I lived in Virginia Beach, I noticed a well dressed young Black couple buying nothing but steaks. I was behind them in line and it came to over $200. They paid with food stamps.

I only had a few items and followed them out. They got into a new Alfa Romeo sports car.

There was a lady in our office who had worked for the state welfare office. I told her about it and she said they would sell the steaks for cash.

She said the worst thing was the expensive sports car. If I reported it to the state, they would actually investigate but she said it would turn out to be in someone else’ name and they would claim they borrowed it.
