HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) Pennsylvania's Republican Party on Saturday endorsed candidates who are closely identified with President Donald Trump to run in contested primaries to challenge the state's two leading Democrats, Gov. Tom Wolf and U.S. Sen. Bob Casey.
The endorsements of gubernatorial candidate Scott Wagner and Senate candidate Lou Barletta came a month before the deadline to file paperwork to get on the May 15 primary election ballot. The endorsements at the Republican State Committee's winter meeting were expected after both men performed well at regional caucus straw votes in recent weeks and come with the party's financial support in the primary.
Barletta is a fourth-term congressman from Hazleton and known most for cracking down on immigrants in the country illegally. He has backed Trump's agenda and co-chaired Trump's 2016 campaign in Pennsylvania. Trump also has spoken glowingly of Barletta. His most prominent primary rivals are former energy executive Paul Addis from suburban Philadelphia and state Rep. Jim Christiana of Beaver County.

I am from PA and have watched Barletta for years. He is the kind of guy that we FReepers love. I think Casey is very vulnerable and he has been mostly invisible...only popping up once in a while as if hes hoping people still think they are voting for his dad.
This is HUGH !!! ... and perhaps even SERIES !!!
As a Pennsylvanian I will certainly be looking to see Gov What can we tax today Wolf ousted, and Senator Casey is lost now that he does not have Obama to tell him what to do and he only got in because of his family name to start with!
Run and win with MAGA candidates!
I was born in Hazleton. Lou was the second congressman to endorse Trump!
Good.
Very encouraging news!
What do we know about Wagner?
I support Scott Wagner for Governor here and think he is the best choice.
He ran as a write in when the GOPe here in York County picked a business as usual guy and Dems picked their candidate in a special election for State Senate in 2014.
The Establishment wants Mike Turzai, House Speaker to be governor this year and are using a guy who served in the military and runs ads saying “I’m a conservative” to split the vote so Truzai wins.
This Paul Mango guy is well moneyed up guy whose military service seems to have taken the John McCain track of $$$$$$$$ no doubt coming from the same kind of special interests.
He ran against the Establishment and identifies as a small business owner with outspoken opinions about labor unions and the public education system here in PA.
He flew over some king sized sized high schools with big athletic fields, palace-like buildings etc. when he got into the State Senate to illustrate the waste of taxpayer dollars and made public education folks mad.
Turzai withdrew yesterday, and Mango is my guy, but where did you get the idea that he is like mcpain?
BTW, I could live with Wagner, but the sonofabitch is a lifelong politician and has his snout firmly entrenched in the trough.
As a Pennsylvania voter, I’d say this is good news. On another note, I’m seeing a lot of TV ads in my district for Rick Saccone, approved Republican candidate for PA-18 Congressional District, against Democratic candidate Conor Lamb, special election in March, for Tim Murphy’s old seat.
The death grip of the Bush League Republicans on the GOP must be broken.
They have been forcing us to vote for their amnesty/open borders candidates for decades.
Wagner first entered politics in 2014 as I recall.
I live here in York County and experienced it firsthand.
He came out of his trash hauling business and as the outsider, Tea Party candidate.
The insiders rigged a special election for State Senate to stop Wagner with one of the good old boys nominated by the committee people in his district.
The Dems had their candidate, too.
But Wagner ran as a write in candidate and won with 47 percent of the vote in the election.
Wagner is the outsider in this race, that’s for sure.
“Lifelong Politician” is not his resume.
Now that Mango, the veteran turned big money “consultant” is Wagner’s only major opponent, I think we can see the difference.
Mango is new Tom Ridge, who was a Vietnam Vet turned insider big money politician.
Ridge didn’t like the word “conservative” in his day, but Mango uses it to cover the truth about himself like all the insiders do nowadays.
A couple of people running for the Republican nomination for governor are opening advertising themselves as “Conservative” - big change from just a few years ago when you had to look closely to see even what party they were running for - Trump’s carrying the state has apparently altering the prevailing political landscape.....
