John Mahoney, a veteran character actor best known for playing the curmudgeonly dog-loving father of the title character in TV's "Frasier," has died, his publicist said Monday.

He was 77 years old.

Mahoney, who played Martin Crane, father of Frasier Crane and Niles Crane, on the long-running sitcom, died Sunday in Chicago after a short illness, according to Wendy Morris.

Peri Gilpin, who played the character Roz Doyle in "Frasier," recalled that Mahoney sang at her wedding, and she recalled some of his best-known performances: "Watch Moonstruck, Say Anything and/or Frasier or anything you can with him in it and raise a glass to John. Remember him well," Doyle wrote.

He had a lot of supporting but good roles in movies. He’ll be missed.

That movie is almost criminally under-rated. One of the Coens' finest.

Great actor, but I can’t forgive him for signing up to play that over the top white supremacist dad in the most annoying liberal movie of all time: Betrayed.

"Frasier" is still a hoot, it's on Netflix and we watch it whenever there is nothing else we want to see.

R.I.P. Thank You for all the Laughs.

The Coens got great performances from everybody. Jennifer Jason Leigh channeling Katherine Hepburn/Rosalind Russell was excellent, as was John Mahoney as her tough, salty editor.

He was very good.

But my word, he looked like he was 77 decades ago!

He could play the heavy as well. He did a great job as a rogue CIA type on ‘Burn Notice’.

The talk of rebooting Frasier should now be moot.
RIP, John.

Mahoney is in “Barton Fink,” as well.

RIP John Mahoney. I’ve been on a Frasier binge lately and have really enjoyed it. It was a great show. They just don’t make them like that anymore - pure silliness without all kinds of rancid lefty politics infecting the dialogue.
