Fred Warmbier, the father of Otto Warmbier, reportedly will travel to South Korea to attend the Winter Olympic Games as a guest of Vice President Mike Pence.
Warmbier, according to a report by The Washington Post Sunday, will make the trip to Pyeongchang this week to attend the Opening Ceremony — the official kickoff to the two-week long Games, scheduled for Feb. 9.
Fred’s son, Otto, was 22 years old when he died in June following 15 months of imprisonment in North Korea.
Fred and his wife, Cindy, have said their son — a University of Virginia student who was arrested in North Korea in 2016 while studying abroad — was tortured while detained, as he came home blind and deaf, and with mangled teeth.

Some said he was a socialist or had his trip susidized by some youth commie church group.

Going to communist nations with dangerous paranoid leaders is a great way to get yourself killed.
I went to Czechoslovakia in 1988, just before the fall of communism. Even though I was in a comparatively free European milieu (versus N. Korea), I adhered strictly to the terms of my visa and didn’t draw attention to myself.
It was not uncommon for people to visit NK via China. It was reported on television that tour companies in China would heavily promote these tours there.
The tour company that Otto joined has discontinued trips to NK, since his death.
There seems no factual basis for him being a spy or a socialist. It appears at 22 years of age, he was out to explore the world.

‘Fred’ Warmbier is creepy.... Just an opinion but I followed the story of his son being there, why he was taken into custody by the N.Koreans, to his release and after.
That said....I do believe his son was tortured.
Wow. I had a talk with my 13 yr old son about bad choices just today. He’s a super good kid, but I told him all it takes in life is one bad move to ruin your life.
What’s more amazing is how many potential such bad moves have little or no visible repercussions.

Possibly. The North Koreans say he did, but you can’t see the face of the guy stealing the poster. He may have been framed. No way to know as North Korea has no fair justice system.
I Don’t believe he did what North Korea convicted him on. They lie, kidnap, murder etc. Their story is a blatant lie.

Exactly. He was detained by the NORKS on probably false charges of taking a poster (the only American in his tour group). The zero administration did absolutely nothing to try to get him returned. He languished for 15 months in that hell hole. The question is, what happened to him? Most definitely tortured. But how? It’s the first time it’s been reported his teeth were “mangled”. How long was he in a coma? And why did he die days after returning to the US? Was he euthanized when it was discovered that he would never recover? Too many questions and such a very terribly sad outcome.
